I just bought a 99 RX300. It has 46,000 miles, AWD, and the 3.0 engine. When I give it gas going up hill and it downshifts, the RX really roars. My wife and I were suprised that a Lexus would be so loud. On level roads it is very quiet. Is this normal or cause for concern?
Thanks!
Might have a crack in the front bank down pipe at the accordion fitting, under the transmission. This was replaced in the 2000 forward RX's with a webbed metal flex pipe, less prone to cracking.
Insure the "T-Bone" rubber bushings are not worn causing the engine to bounce around. This is on the right top of the engine connecting to the body. Additionally, your transmission fluid should be checked as to it's color and level with engine running and at temp. Should be cherry red in color and is Toyota Type IV only. There are many posts on the transmission fluid changing vs flushing.
There is also the oil sludge issue with your engine. Many posts on that topic too. Hope you got some maintenance records. Welcome to the Club...
Thanks Tammy. The transmission stick is showing above the level and is far from red. I will be making a visit to the local Toyota dealer (no local Lexus) for a fluid change and an inspection on the other items you mentioned. Hopefully there is no sludge!
Thanks again!
