Default RX300 transmission failure

My transmission failed on my 2001 RX300 with 75,000 miles. The dealer said it will cost me $4,000 to repair. When I said I was considering trading it in the price to repair went up to $5,000. Has anyone had any luck getting Lexus to cover this even though the power train warranty is 70,000?

My dealer implied the failure was due to my not having the transmission fluid CHANGED three times by now. I think what he really means is that I haven't been getting it serviced by them. He scoffed when I said the book only says to inspect. I have records showing that the fluid was inspected during routine oil changes including as recently as 71,000 miles.

Any suggestions?

I guess thats about right. I know the non-Toyota shops get over $100. I think I will stick with my drain and fills. It only cost about $16, if I do it myself and get the fluid from the Toyota dealer. (4 qts, x $3.79 per qt plus .75 for drain plug washer)

My flush at Lexus was about $125, so that might not be too far off.

I'm reporting back after 3 drain and fills and finally a flush at 90K miles...

I used to have some lag or slow shifting when under full throttle and upshifting. That is now gone.

I also used to have a tough time shifting out of Park to R. Now that's also gone. It's much smoother and I don't have to yank it out of Park anymore.

From now on, I'm checking my tranny fluids religiously.
