Default Towing Cross Country

My 2001 FWD RX300 is at 58k and I will be moving from Seattle to Phoenix (1500miles). I am planning to do my 60k service (only Lexus specified service- no dealer addons) done before I move and another oil/filyer change at destination.

I am getting the transmission oil chnaged before the move. Should I get it changed again after towing for 1500 miles?

What additional babying do I need to keep my RX in top shape before/after towing ~3000lbs for 1500 miles?

{ Pics and more details to follow : Am getting Class 2 hitch and transmission cooler installed from UHaul for $300; Brake/LSD oil change for $180* from Lexus; Oil/Filter change for $20* from Toyota; Transmission fluid change for $80* from Independant mechanic; engine coolant for $45* from independant mechanic; *Labor only)

You can only tow up to 2,000 lbs with FWD. So don't bother with Class II hitch or tranny cooler.

Just curious as to how FWD/AWD will affect the tow rating?

I would definitely stick with a least a class 2 hitch. Most major manufactures (Uhaul, HiddenHitch) don't even make less than a class 2 for the RX. I am sure if you searched you could find a universal fit class 1 hitch that may fit. But why? My suggestion would be to install a class 3. I used a class 3 and my only application is a bike rack. HiddenHitch 70777 is a good one and used by many in the RX and Highlander forums. I am sure there are many others. A class 3 hitch has a 2" square receiver, where a class 2 on has a 1/14" square receiver. Check the item you want to attach to the receiver. Most come with 2" square (even bike racks) and require you to use an adapter to attach to 1/14". Do a search in the RX forums and see what most others are using.
My 2001 owner’s manual claims 3500 lb. towing capacity and does not mention any difference between FWD/AWD. This requires further investigation. I did get the following quote from the FAQ section of this forum:
"•Tow rating (max):
3,500 lb (requires hitch accessory)
2,000 lb (without towing package on 4x2)"

With the oil cooler and hitch you are adding most of the towing prep package and should be good for 3,500 if the above is true. I would try to confirm this with a RX service advisor who has been around.
Also be aware there has been a lot of confusion as to what is required for the wiring harness. Hopefully, the uhaul guy knows what he is doing and this will all be transparent to you. You may want to do a search here and check this out, and just question the installer so there are no surprises at installation

Hi gsenthil,

When I bought my Lexus, my salesperson explained to me the different tow ratings between FWD and AWD. When you tow a trailer, at least 10% of the weight is placed on the hitch. Therefore the rear wheels do most of the towing job. RWD or AWD is preferred for towing. With just FWD, you'll put undue stress on vehicle chassis thus you can only safely do up to 2,000 lbs (even with tranny cooler, etc.) The RX is not a strong frame-based SUV. It's uni-body like cars.

See if you can load all your stuff in a lighter trailer. Consider garage sale the large heavy pieces.

Hi Mikey,

FYI: My Lexus Class 2 factory tow package comes with a 2" receiver. And I believe all Class 2 are 2".

Hope this helps.

Aftermarket class 2 hitches are 1 1/4" and class 3 are 2". Go to hiddenhitch.com and click on brochure or application guide and you will see. The same info is on all the major hitch manufacturer sites.
My 2001 owners manual lists towing capacity as 3500 with no distinction between FWD/AWD. I find the same when I go to Lexus.com and check the towing capacity of the 330. I am not sure where this 2000 lb. spec came from other than maybe they only used a factory 2000 lb. hitch on earlier models.
HarrierAWD, do you really have a FWD with a name like HarrierAWD? Just curious.

Mike

Default Taking an even strain . . .

As I recall, there is no difference in the rated towing capacity of the FWD vs. the AWD. I don't think a 300 lb tongue weight would unload the front end significantly, but if you're concerned, an equalizing hitch would transfer some of that load forward, and better distribute the weight. A tranny cooler would be a good idea too, since you are operating right at the limit of the vehicle. Your route will include a considerable amount of climbing - pick a cool day for your trip!
