PCV valve maintenance
I'm hearing a lot lately about people with stalling cars, yet nothing refering to frequency of the PCV valve maintenance.
I pull off my PCV valve once a year and spray it liberally with WD-40 and shake it out to dry it and then re-install it.. You could also go out and buy another one if you don't want to clean it. It just costs a couple of dollars and it serves a very important purpose:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve allows air to flow from the crankcase to the intake manifold. Air will not flow in the opposite direction. The resulting negative pressure in the crankcase causes air to be pulled from the air cleaner into the engine via the oil fill cap. Normally these gases in the crankcase would be vented to the air, with this reburning of the gases, hydrocarbon emissions are reduced significantly.
On the RX, its location is towards the rear of the engine on the passenger side connected to a hose which runs along the valve cover towards the throttle body. Its a black plastic valve only costing a few dollars...
My neighbour has a Camry and only realized this maintenance issue when I brought it to his attention... He said, "I wonder if thats what is causing the car to run wierd !??"
Cheers,
Fern
