Default 1999 Radio Antenna Not Coming Out

So I'm trying to replace the radio antenna, and I know it should be a 10 minute job, but when I turn on the radio with the antenna nut undone, the antenna is not exiting the tube after turning on the radio the way it does so nicely in all of the YouTube videos I've seen What am I missing? And thank you in advance for any advice.

What is the reason to change the mast?

If it is broken or bent, then at least one section is deformed in the inside of the tube. You have to use controlled aggression to get it out.

Have seen that already the simple fact is when I turn the power on the radio, the antenna will extend as far as it'll go but it doesn't exit the tube and I am told not to force it out of there in fear of doing more damage.

The mast isn't fully extending. I remember seeing in one of the DIYs emphasizing not to force it out of the tube and was wondering if there is any other way but if you say controlled aggression may be required, then that may be just the ticket.

Other alternative is to pull the whole motor out. [undo the rear right panelling to access]. This might be more prudent as an errant slip can possibly damage the exterior paint.

There are times when the cable is broken inside the motor assembly and one has to take the motor out. It is mentioned in the DIY that you must match the new antenna and cable to the one you pull out to ensure everything came out.
