Transmission issue

So, my 2002 RX300 was having trans oil temperature issues. On long trips the trans oil temp light would come on. Fast forward and now the car only goes in reverse. I dropped the pan, replaced the filter, replaced the "D" solenoid, drained and replaced the fluid. Disconnected the battery to reset the PCM. No help. Any ideas? Anything I still need to try? Is is even worth trying to get this rebuilt or replaced? I have been quoted $3500 to rebuild it, $4000 to replace.

In between lines it seems at least more than 1 professional has determined the trans needs replacement. If I am wrong please have it varified.

Do you want to invest 3.5-4K?
