Default sell at auction?

Hey Club L I’ve been a lurker for years whenever I need some Lexus intel. Great site! Recently I stumbled upon a pretty decent awd 03 RX with 63k. A friend of a friends mom passed away and somehow I ended up with the car. It is pretty darn nice. Zero dings on the Carfax with completely original paint and body. Drives fantastic. If only it had black interior lol.

It needs a few details sorted out which is the kind of stuff I really enjoy. It seems there is a thread here on basically any and every issue that these may ever have. Centuries ago (omg the 90’s) I ran an evening service department at a large PacNW Toyota dealer so this isn’t my first rodeo. A good friend from back then was a tech at the dealer and now has his own indy car repair shop that specializes in Toyota, Lexus or anything Japanese. He is the best technician I’ve ever met and I bet I’ve met thousands. I’m lucky to have such a great support network.

Question. Has anyone ever seen an online auction for a 1st gen RX300 at any of the new-age car auction sites such as Bring a Trailer or Cars & Bids? Not interested in eBay. I’m thinking to sell it on BaT with no reserve and just let it go to the highest bidder. Lots of excitement that way lol.

Is that a dumb idea? I like the idea of no reserve auctions with difficult to price items. The true value of a thing tends to reveal itself.

typical mid June day in Seattle lol

Why not check our market place [will require a history to post], your local ads, facebook market place, Craigs list etc to determine a ball park value and post it there for sale. Put a for sale sign and drive around or park in public places.

The biding area is really an arena for folks looking for a bargain. The purchaser typically wants to walk away with an item and takes the risk of not knowing the true condition. For this reason alone I would not list the vehicle there.

Please note the forum rules prohibit for sale in our regular forum. This is done to maintain the prime purpose [not for sale] and protect the members from potential fraud.

Thank you for the advice @salimshah I appreciate it. I take it you have never seen one for sale at an online auction outside of eBay? Would love to see some results if indeed that has happened.

A “for sale” sign in the window? Park it at Wal Mart? So boring! What is this the 80’s? lol. An online auction with a salty commentary section and no reserve is way more fun!

Your take on the “bidding arena” is an interesting one. Basically you’re saying an automobile auction is a buyer’s market. The deals (for buyers) are there you seem to be saying. Which is exactly the opposite of what I’ve observed on these sites the last few years. From what I’ve seen it is about as far away from a buyer’s market as can possibly be. Interesting cars are selling for record prices online and that mentality is bleeding down to the everyday slash mundane rides also as long as they are in top shape.

Understood about no car sales in the general threads. This car is absolutely not for sale here! I am genuinely curious if anyone has ever seen one for auction but not on eBay. I’m guessing the answer to that is “no” lol. This one may may be the first!

It is a matter of marketing.

If the vehicle is in good shape, then maximize it by displaying it.

Times have indeed changed and there are new ploys. Hope you figure out what is best for you.
