I haven't experimented with this myself, but as far as I know, the engine keeps running even if the key is not within range. It's just that it can't be started that way. Or am I mistaken?

On my Viper Smart Start, remote start the car, you unlock/disarm the alarm, open the door, put in the key, turn ignition to on position, press brake pedal, change Park gear to Drive gear and you're good.
more specifically the engine shuts down when you pull on the door handle or push the trunk button. you don't even have to have the key anywhere near the vehicle. if it is in remote start mode and someone pulls the handle, the motor shuts down..
