Default Advice on a new Dig. SLR

OK, my wife was taking pictures of the kids the other day outside. She set our Nikon N80 in the lawn and walked away . She remembered that she left it there the next day and imagine what....it was gone . Oh well, we were thinking about a digital SLR anyway. Now we have an excuse. Now for my question, which one to buy? I don't want to spend more than 1k for the body and lens. Also, is there anything special to look for(memory, pixels, speed, etc)? l notice that the Canon Rebel kit is very popular. I really liked my Nikon but am not sold on any brand. Any advice is appreciated.

Mods, can you move this to the digital photography forum. Sorry, I put it in the wrong place. Thanks.

Can you specify how you will use the camera. I'm personlly looking into a camera myself in that price range and have narrowed my sights on the new Sony R1 http://www.dpreview.com/articles/sonydscr1/ I currently have the older version. It is not a true DSLR because the lens is not removable, but it still boasts 10 megapixel, 24-120mm zoom, large sensor etc...

I am really thinking about the Canon Rebel XT kit and the Nikon D20. I will be using it mostly to take pictures of my kids, cars, etc. No crazy photog stuff.

I have a Sony 828 for sale if you're interested in a camera that is similar to the R1 but less expensive and -2mp
