Default Mustang GTs

Stock Mustangs GTs are slow. Stock Mustang Cobras run about low 14s, maybe high 13s. I think you might be confusing the Cobras and GTs. Motor Trends shows the GT running around mid to high 14s and the Cobra running high 13s/ low 14s. This is consistent with what I've seen at the track. A stock GS 400 and a Stock Mustang GT should be a close race. Maybe give the edge to a 5 speed GT.

No, I am talking about the 260hp 16 valve 4.6 liter Mustang GT 1999 and newer. Here at sea level most run 13.9-14.2 bone stock with a decent driver. Cobras are faster. I also have an old 87 TBird that I installed a Mustang 5.0 and T-5 that runs 13.7 @ 102mph with 1.98 60fts on Discount Tire street radials (245/50-16s).

My LS400 is BONE stock down to filters. I made 3 passes: 15.5 @ 90, 15.5 @ 90 and 15.4 @ 91 after 90 minutes cool down. All passes we without tire spin (wouldn't spin) and all 60fts were in the 2.3 range.

Your times do seem slow. What is your altitude? What did the car run before mods?

Thumbs up Times

I don't want to argue about something that's documented. Maybe it is the altitude. I don't know what altitute Great Lake Dragway is at, it's not on their web neither. Maybe my time are slow. I can't compare them to other GS400s because it's seem like you and I are the only ones that go to the track. In my experience at the track it seems like humidity has the greatest effect on E/T. This could be because I've had high PSI Turbo rides. I did go to the track again and ran a 14.2 with a 2.15 60 feet time. A little better, I would like to run a 14.0. But I'm happy with my last time.

I should have figured you had a f-body? You been suppporting mustangs and z-28/trans ams. I haven't lost to a Stock GT, z-28, or a trans am at the track yet.

That's a great time on your Tbird!

I don't want to add this in but my completely stock GS4 with 16" wheels ran 14.4@98.6 with a 2.3 0-60ft. I would be very upset about the times you ran at the track. I personally think it also depends on how you break in your car and or they way you normally drive it.

Sasha - I just took my wheels off again today so I will be planning on going to the track very soon!
Interested in going? Grand Bend or something...

14.4 is a pretty good time. I think Motor Trends has our car at 14.5-14.7. Are you running your stock Platinum Rims, I think they weigh a lot less than the normal rims, Rolling Mass might attribute to a tenth or 2 in a 1/4 mile.

No, I'm not upset at my times anymore. I really don't have too many mods, TC and Air Intake & ECU. I've only add 11 rwhp and I dropped 4 tenths, that's pretty good. It was mainly the TC that helped.

Good luck getting into the 13s! What mods are you thinking of doing? What's an ET street?

ET streets are drag slicks...so breaking a 13.9, completely stock, would be feasible. I think Motor Trend or Car and Driver had a '98 GS4 running 14.2@100. As far as mods go, I am ordering a body kit soon, installed after this winter (michigan), but I do not plan on doing any engine mods. I normally run 20s, so racing when those are on rarely happens. Only other mod is the lowering, which by CL law, has to be done when using larger diameter wheels. I am probably one of the only people on this board who enjoys riding on his stock wheels as opossed to 20s...

Hey I don't want to argue with you anymore, I have a Issue of Road & Track Sept. 2000 right in front of me, it has the 2000 GS 400 running 14.5 e/t. Different magazines are going to have different times. Like I said I don't want to argue with you anymore.

So you're thinking of running slicks. You know what they say, every tenth you cut on your 60 feet time you'll cut 2 tenth in the 1/4 mile. Let us know what you run with the slicks. Be careful not to break your trans.

I never thought we were arguing? I did say..."I think"....right? I am sorry you perceived my post that way, but I honestly did not have that in mind. As for running slicks, one pass on et streets should not do any harm on a part made by toyota, but it all depends on how hard it hooks. Don't think our cars make enough power to cause any extremely hard launches with a stock stall....perhaps if you tried, its a different story.

We lost a couple of messages here but....

GS4K,

With the recent events we decided to not travel down to Rt 66 (I don't even know if they were open).

Our current plans are to travel down there again next tuesday. Hope to see you there.

Peter

Maybe. I'm going to dyno my car at Street Stuff in Addison Wednesday. I installed a S-AFC, now I need to tune it. Most probably I won't be there but if I am I'll look for ya.

GS400_PUSHER,
I'm glad someone could back me up. Thanks. Mustang GT are slow for what they are, a sports car. I'm 5-0 against 99-01 Mustang GTs at the track.

Mr. Johnson,
Rt 66 was closed that Tuesday, but I did go to the battle of the imports September 22. Let's just say I represented Lexus well. I was running consistent 14.3s. When I stalled up the car and used the e-shift I was running 14.2s. I might have been able to get the car to do 14.1s if I had a couple of more runs, but I needed to focus on running consistent times not fastest times. So I was not stalling the car and it was in 'D' for dumb. That was Saturday's Testing. Sunday was the main day but it was rained out. I do plan on getting the Greddy cat-back and a home-made cold air intake. Hopefully this can get me in the 13s. Keep in touch, let me know the next time your plan on going to the track. I think Rt 66 is closed for the season.

'98 GS400 TC, Apex S-AFC, 247 rwhp/270 ft/lbs torque.

What are you doing running 275 drag's on a fairly stock car? You should be using 225's, no bigger. You only need 275's if you have 500hp or so. Your car has TOO MUCH grip and that is causing too much friction for you to pull good times. You're significantly increasing the weight with wider tires...my guess is those tires themselves weigh at least 35lbs...which makes the Enkei's useless when your stock tire weighs 25lbs or so.

Thumbs up Great time

The track wasn't closed that tuesday. I got 4 runs in with a best of 14.718. The rain and closing came later Shaving 0.4 with a TC seems like a great deal. I did the runs just to see what my "before SC" times were going to be like.
