Winter racing radesignes shifter install
So im going to do a little write up for my fellow auto box guys looking for a different shifter, or going stand alone. Yes you can do the switch/manualizing mod and this is basically the same thing with a gated shifter. I bought everything i need from radesignes, and my local parts store.
You will need the following things
The shifter with the a340e kit (buy them not installed saves you a few bucks and the write up is on their website. Super straight forward. It comes with the trans linkage adapter and shifter cable. BUY THE ONE WITH THE BLACK PLASTIC HOUSING FOR MOUNTING.
Wire cutters, electrical tape, some 16g wire, socket set, drill and drill bit, jack stands, jack, needle nose pliers, some self tapping screws, a multi meter and coffee.
Over all its pretty straight forward install.
**DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY**
you will be working with your ecu and wiring. Dont fry your **** because you are lazy.
After that, jack the car up, block the rear wheels, and get to pulling **** out.
I started inside because it was raining.
Pull the radio, center console ect. Everything down to the factory shifter. Once you are down to the shifter its a bit of back and forth under the car.
There are tons of write ups how to disconnect the factory linkage but you arent using any of it again so no need to be nice to the clip that holds ot together. I did everything without removing the exhaust, and the extra room would have been nice but if i can get my fat paws in there so can you.
Once the linkage is disconnected, remove the 4 10mm bolts that secure the factory shifter to the trans trunnel.
SAVE THE RUBBER UNDERNEATH YOU WILL WANT TO USE IT AGAIN. You gotta poke out the 4 steel inserts to get it off the factory shifter.
easy peasy lemon squeezy. Follow the instructions provided with the shift kit to install the adapter on the trans and mount the cable bracket.
Now the fun part. Test fitting the shifter with the center console. Get it as close to the factory location as possible, i had to trim some of the black plastic mount on the shifter to clear the hand/parking brake bracket. I placed the leading edge a bit over the sound deadening material that sits a little before the ash tray in the center console. And zipped it down with self tappers. I DID NOT have to trim any of the factory plactics on the center console, BUT you will lose your cup holder because of the linkage cable. I just took the cover off and placed it in the hole, so it doesnt look as bad.
Next is installing the actual linkage cable. I drilled the hole for mine up by the front edge of the shifter mount. Your going to want to run it above the trans mount almost straight up through the hole then down to the rear of the shifter. IT IS A PAIN IN THE ***. But you can make it fit under the factory center console.
You are going to want to remove the shifter to attach the cable and adjust the cable once its connected. I left the shifter loose in the drivers seat and adjusted the cable under the car so the shifter sits perfect in the cut outs corresponding with the trans linkage. I found it easiest to adjust in reverse. Test the throws to make sure it sits proper in every gear. THIS IS IMPORTANT. TAKE YOUR TIME HERE. When its set, tighten everything down. You wont have to get under the car again at this point if you are good.
Mount the shifter PUT THAT RUBBER PIECE YOU SAVED UNDER IT TO SEAL OFF THE FACTORY HOLE AND RUN A SELF TAPPER THROUGH THAT BEOTCH, test it again. Before you get the console back on do the wireing. LOOK UP YOUR ECU PINOUT. IVE GOT A JZZ30 1JZ. YOUR PINS MAY BE DIFFERENT mine were 77 and 83. You are looking for "AT solenoid #1" AND "AT solenoid #2" these directly correspond to the two blue wires on the winters shifter labeled solenoid 1 and 2. If you **** this up i cant ****ing help you. Chop the wires on the factory harness, extend them, and connect them. Leave enough room after the plug that if you **** up and cut the wrong wire, you can reconnect it.
The red wire goes to SWITCHED ignition power. Reconnect your battery dont start the car. Turn the ignition on but dont. Start. The. Car. take the plug that plugged into the factory shifter. On mine it was a 4 wire plug and one wire of them becomes hot when the ignition is on. Cut it, and connect it to the red winters shifter wire. You shouldnt have to extend it.
Thats it. You should be done. I pulled the led lights off from under the factory trim and reconnected them. Your dash gear indicator should still work and correspond with the new shifter. If it didnt, you ****ed up somewhere with the cable adj. Go check it again. Take the car off the jack stands and test it. Put it back together and enjoy your manualized gated shifter.
