Default Sc windshield (SC300/400)

so my 95 needs windshield replaced but does any first generation shield fit on it?

I have had to replace the windshield twice in the past 4 years plus. Used the glass coverage from AAA so they prescribed the company. After market glass is available but the tricky part is the mount for the rearview mirror.

On an SC (at least my '92) the mounting bracket is an engineering mess and evidently the first guy broke the mirror but was clever in making it fit so did not notice. The 2nd guy (20 months later) discovered the issue (I was there this time to watch) and several attempts to jury rig the mount were abysmal and later I ended up resorting to have the dealer replace the broken parts and install the mirror (but you can only imagine what they charged...).

I would advise you carefully approach removing the mirror before having a glass company replace your windshield..... The two little ball bearings in the bracket tend to fly out so beware...

^^ This is so true. The mounting system for the mirror is very tricky to get out carefully and just as tricky to reinstall.

I last had a PGW aftermarket windshield installed in my SC. Very happy with it.

I believe these are the relevant mirror mounting parts. Fun fact: the LFA uses some of these same rearview mounting parts (with a different mirror assembly).

Rear view mirror mounting part numbers:

87817-24010 — x1 Mirror Inside Spacer (Metal inside suspension)
87825-24010 — x1 Mirror Inside Spring (Metal "U" Spring)
87808-24010 — x2 "Mirror Inside Holder" or "Holder Sub-Assy" (Ball Bearings in casings)
87853-24020C0 — x1 "Base" (Outside trim piece between mount and glass. Says to order by interior color)
90148-60018 — x1 Screw, Hex Lobular (Rearview mirror screw)

The early ones must be a little different, my 92 did not have the ball bearings mentioned. When the Safelite guy got here to put it in he said man these things are tricky with the ball bearings, but once he got into it he said they were not on mine and the mount was different. The replacement glass did not have the part normally glued on to it, so he had to bust the old one off the old glass and reuse it.

^^ That's interesting. My car is a 1993 and I installed an auto-dimming mirror from a 1997 model so this difference must have only been present in the 1992 models.

With mine I could not remove the mirror normally because some idiot had GLUED it in place. It had to be broken out. I could not re-use any of the original mounting parts or original non-auto-dimming mirror anyway.

I just looked up our USDM SC300 in the Partsouq database. Cars dated from production dates 1991-1997 don't appear to have any difference listed there in how the mirrors mount.

Could it have been that the previous owner glued in the rearview mount in a similar way to what I described? The factory Torx bolt also has some Loctite on it from the factory. This can make it exceptionally difficult to remove safely without the right tool.

It is also possible that some aftermarket OEM-spec glass companies might not include the same rearview mounting provision that Lexus used from the factory but I can't confirm that based on my own experience.

That's possible, I wish I had paid more attention. Like I said, the Safelite guy was surprised. The factory mirror re-attached using the hardware in the mirror, so I am really not sure what the difference is. I actually had him replace it twice in the last 6 months. I had a new windshield installed before our race in August, then the first day of the race a Miata promptly went off track into the gravel and re-entered the racetrack right in front of me spraying gravel, hence the second windshield.

I have to agree with Kahn that your mirror had to be an aftermarket or DIY install. The bracket with the 2 tiny ball bearings are "standard issue" so if did not have them (which is a good thing, IMO) then all the better for the next time......

^^ The more I have thought about this in the last couple of days I don't think there was any other rear view mirror mounting design for the entire model run. The parts appear to be the same for all 1991-2000 Soarers and all 1992-2000 SC's. Although the mirrors themselves might be differently angled for LHD and RHD cars. The actual mounting parts... they all look the same for all years.

Default 2000 SC400 windshield replacement

Hi Craig (KahnBB6),
I finally got my windshield replaced today from a local shop (in San Francisco) that got 5 stars on Yelp. I agonized over getting OEM (Lexus) v. other third party manufacturers. OEM would have been an additional $700-800. I tried getting Pilkington or PGW but they no longer make glass for the SC400. I even called Pilkington and they confirmed this. The ONLY glass company that makes a replacement for the SC400 other than from Lexus is FYG. Having read some negative things about this company (made in China), I inspected the glass and for all intents and purposes, the quality looked pretty good with the same greenish tint at the top. In fact FYG now supplies glass for a number of luxury car manufacturers including BMW, Jaguar, Audi and Mercedes.

The installation couldn't have gone smoother. They were able to re-use the original exterior trim pieces. The rear view mirror mounting on the new glass was also spot-on as the glass comes with a base already aligned and mounted on the inside. The old mirror was just unbolted and screwed onto the new fitting. Didn't have to buy any additional hardware. As far as I can tell the glass appears quite clear without any apparent waviness. Furthermore the "black dot" pattern that trims the edge of the windshield is almost a dead ringer for the original. Only difference (which might be good) is that the etched manufacturer name is at the lower right hand side instead of the left side. Makes the view from the driver's side completely clear.

Overall, my first impression is that the FYG glass is surprisingly good. Total price was about $300 which my insurance company covered except for a $100 deductible.

FYI, the model no. of the FYG I used was: FW00695 GGNFYG which had a greenish tint at the top (OEM). There was also one with a bronze tint at the top. The glass shop mentioned that the later model years (1998-2000 SC400?) used a different windshield than earlier model-years so the above FYG no. may not be applicable to your car.

^^ I'm just seeing this post now. Thank you very much for updating us on your experience replacing the windshield this last December and your clarification that 98-2000 models actually use a different spec windshield. And that our options at this point is Lexus OEM or FYG. I still have a 2012 vintage PGW windshield in my 1993 model. All the replacement windshields for our cars should have the standard mirror mounting base included.
