CA Catalytic Converter 97 vs 98-99
Sup guys, I have a 97 RSP and I need a new cat. I looked up the part numbers and came up with
17410-46330, list price is around $1k. I also seen the converter for 98-99 which is 17410-46470. List price is $350!! Anybody know if the 98-99 fit the 97 and pass smog? Why such a price difference?

Looks to me like the first one is not for your car, the second one is.

wait, do you have an SC or a Supra?
you posted in the SC forums so I presumed you have an SC.
not likely to fit, even though they have the same motor, it isn't just the motor at issue, but the mounting points and fitment under the car.
might check with your local muffler shop and see if an after market will work.. I have a 1995 4runner than had a blown cat, and I passed smog legally with a flowmaster after market cat, that cost me $180 installed.

I have an 97 SC300, thats what i was wondering, if anybody knows if the fitment is the same or not since its the same motor. Thats a huge price difference if the mounting points are just different.

SuPrAmAn69,
For aftermarket cats that will work on a Cali-Spec SC300, use this resource to verify what you are buying:
https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTo...earchTool.aspx
The equivalent Supra cat will probably work since it's the same engine and emission system (assuming CA-Spec for CA-Spec... and Federal for Federal) but note that the Supra has a shorter wheelbase and thus the OEM 2nd catalytic convertor pipe/assembly is shorter and would require an extension adaptor. I haven't tried running this by an inspector yet myself with my SC but the last time I had my smog test the technician did go under the car to verify that either an OEM cat was present or that an aftermarket cat was present that is legal for my model year. He did verify the E.O. number on the cat with a mirror. I am not sure if anything used to extend the pipe would throw him off.
Functionally a 1998 Supra NA 2nd OEM cat pipe is designed to work the same way as the pipe/cat in a 1998 SC300. Supras were discontinued after 1998 however and still, California BAR would say you can't use the Supra cat/pipe... even though it does the same thing as the SC version for 1998 models. 1999-2000 wouldn't apply... legally.
This thread might help to give you an idea about where things stand with aftermarket cats for SC's although most of the notes apply to earlier pre-OBD2 models:

thanks for the reply, and yes I've read that thread numerous times with no luck in my situation. I don't want to go aftermarket since there's no real direct placement available. I really just want to know if these two parts are interchangeable, if anybody has any experience on it, as I'd rather spend $350 than $1200.
Now... will your smog inspector take any issue with extending that pipe with a small adapter or a welded extension, even though this otherwise looks like (and is) an OEM cat convertor pipe? Not sure on that either.
Will it work exactly like the OEM 1998-2000 SC300 cat convertor assembly? Again, I can't say from experience but I would assume it does, especially if you're buying a 1998 part for a 1998 part designed for the same exact engine configuration, transmission configuration and the same ECU programming between both cars.
Edit: I just re-read your first post and remembered that you have a 1997 SC300. In that case, the engine configuration is slightly different between both '97 SC300's, '97 Supra NA's and '98+ SC300's and '98 Supra NA's. Identical for the same model years of each vehicle but not the same between '97 and '98 since that was the switch to VVT-i.
