1999 Gs300 Diff in a 93 sc300
Hey guys I have been looking into differentials for some time but cant seam to find a good answer on this.
I have a 1993 sc300 and have found that the gs300 diffs are a little more affordable.
Some sites say they fit but are slightly different? but will not go into how they are different.
Any one have any info on this? things I would like to know.
1. will it fit
2. will my axels and drive shaft mount up with no problem
3. what are your thoughts on gs300 diff

2. Axles yes, driveshaft you may have to swap the companion flange on the front for the one from your stock diff. Some of the GS models (at least the v8 400 and 430) use a different size "companion flange", and some don't so if its from a 300 it may be the same as yours not sure I know there are some that are different.. this is what the driveshaft bolts to. the nut that holds it on also sets the pre-load, so you have to count how many turns when you take it off and try and keep it the same when putting the new flange back on. its not crazy hard but it is possible to mess up if its way too loose or way too tight you can mess up the gears inside.
3. I don't see why you wouldn't just use the right sc300 one. most people only swap the later year GS400 diffs which had the lower diff ratio due to the 5spd automatic, this pairs well with 6 speed transmissions or if you really want to spread your gears out. I am not sure what the 98+ gs300's ratio was but I know they were all 5spd automatics also so likely its also a lower ratio and different than the one you have now. IF you install a diff with a much different ratio, your car will not like it as in your gears will become shorter or longer and cruising rpm's and speedometer and all that goos stuff will be affected. with a much lower ratio diff like from the later year GS, the car will accelerate slower, stay in each gear longer, show a speed slower than it really is, and also your cruising rpm's will be lowered for a given speed. basically wierd things may seem to happen if you do that on a stock car.
what are you trying to do exactly? if you have to use a GS diff try and find one from a 92-97 which had a 4 speed auto like the sc's. also ask the vendors in the classifieds and check locally the stock diffs are not hard to find.

Well what started out as a simple change the subframe out with one that is not broken in half is what started all this . had to junk my diff because there was just to much rust to salvage it. So right now I am trying to get the car moving and for that I need a diff. I was planning on putting a stock one back I. Then the gs 300 diff poped up and wanted to inquir about it. I believe both the Sc and gs 300 diff are 3.92 ratios? Right now I just need it to work wile I source parts to out in the 6 speed from the 350z

SC and GS in the same years have a similar ratio, but as I said in 98 the GS went to a 5 speed automatic and the SC300 did not (the sc400 did).
And when Toyota uses a 5 speed they usually lower the diff by a huge amount, like the 98+ gs400 diff is a 3.26.
If you put a 3.26 on a stock sc300 auto its going to drive like a pig, but it will drive forward and reverse if thats all you need for now.
