thanks gerb and iam an old man myself.
so my problem Is my driveshaft is too long. like by an inch-2 inches. when I drive backup or reverse the front of the driveshaft grinds on the back of the tranny housing(w58) for just a second. always happens at a dead stop, or when the car first moves.
this has been happening for a few years now.
I originally got a sc300 auto rear ds and I acquired a mk3 w58 front shaft. I then got it pressed into the center carrier housing from the sc300(auto shaft)
and here is the end product
so in reality I just need an inch or 2 of shorter ds length.
so I don't want to make the mistake of getting an actual w58 ds from a sc300 and having the same issue. reminder this is going on a sc400 body.
anyone have a take on this??

Wait a second.... mk3 w58 front shaft????
I was talking sc300 5-speed shaft. The rear portions of the SC300 auto AND 5-speed are the same. The front portion is not.
I'm not aware of people using a mk3 w58 driveshaft at all. You can use the r154 front halfshaft when swapping in a R154 into the sc300 but can't speak for an mk3 W58 driveshaft.

well be shocked and awed!!
-- iam running a mk4/sc300 w58 transmission with a 2jz bell housing.
-- and iam running a front half w58 driveshaft from a mk3 n/a supra
--and finishing it off with a rear driveshaft from a lexus sc300 auto.
yes they all work but the front half needs to be an inch-2shorter- my issue!
