1JZ overheating a little
Ever since my swap, my temperature on the needle has been sitting dead in the middle. I also put in some fresh coolant and added Lucas temperature coolant additive. Well a few weeks ago, my fan shroud top mounting bolts broke, they were already broken, but it finally broke all the way. I removed the fan shroud and the fan with clutch. Just flushed the coolant since the cold weather was starting to get here. Ever since the fan has been removed, the car at idle after about five minutes, will start to rise. It only goes up just a full line on the actual reading on the cluster. Thats it. I am concerned that this is the leading cause of this. I did not install another bottle of the Lucas coolant additive, just straight coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. There is no coolant on the floor, no drip from the water pump, and the coolant overflow bottle is at the full mark. Do you all think its because its the fan and shroud being gone? Or something else in the mix happening, and these are the first signs of something major, like a head gasket blown? I am really leaning towards the missing of the fan shroud, because the car runs really good. Also noticed the car will start after about 2-3 seconds after the pump is primed. This is after it sits for 3-5 days. I think the hard starting is because the motor is just cold. I need some thoughts on this, so i can continue my search. I also know there are many people on here that run electric fans from a IS300 and some run no fan at all..
Thanks for any input.....

you need the fan shroud. with out it to funnel the air thru the radiator to the fan. it can't cool the radiator adequately.
i would suggest getting another shroud if you wish to keep the stock fan clutch setup or go electric. just make sure you get really good fans.
i've driven my car to miami and back with a CXracing radiator and a pair of fans on an aluminum fan shroud. no over heating and i have a temperature probe at the bottom of the radiator. i stayed at 180 to 190 degrees the whole time.
the fans are rated at 1300 cfms each, so combined 2600 cfms.
im also running the stock thermostat. never even changed it since I installed the motor swap. i will eventually put in a 160 degree in it to get it to run even cooler.
My AEM triggers the fans on and off at 170 degrees so my car doesn't have them running continuously too.
hope that adds a little help.

All of this helps guys. I just wanted some other opinions to make me think nothing but the fan is the problem. I am still on the look out for a stock SC300 fan shroud. I did find a stock fan and clutch locally at the junkyard LKQ. If anyone has one is real good shape, and no cracks, rips, and broken tabs, PM me...

overheating
this is my first import/turbo builds. i'm having issues w over heating on my 1jz.. its a stock twin set up right now .i have done the radiator and inner cooler swap. and i have an electric fan(pushing) and i also have a hydraulic fan set up. it does not have a shroud.
would it help if i made a shroud for my current set up? or is a clutch fan that much better

I am curious, what you are getting for actual Coolant Temperatures. (ie. 85'C, 95'C etc)
Saying a needle is staying dead set in the middle, doesn't sound like overheating issues to me.
