Default EGR Cleaning

Now, I know there are a couple of threads on the EGR system and how to fix it. But it does not really affect me, because the check engine light stays off most of the time. So my question is, will using something like STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner actually clean any part of the EGR system? Thanks for any input on the matter.

Doubtful...unless the combusted vapors from the STP cycle through the EGR system

What would be the best way to clean it? Seafoam? Switch it out with another EGR module?

Its kind of a pain in the *** to get to, I had to end up removing the intake runners (from the y-pipe to the intake manifold). You can just loosen the intake runners also, not remove them, that will give you enough room to take out the EGR system to clean it. However!! If you're studs that hold the EGR "saucer thing" to your intake are not stripped, you could use a small ~6mm or small inverted allen socket to just remove these...then I think it will slide out. There is also this approach:

Either way, to clean it, you'll likely have to remove it. If you need to do your spark plugs, valve clearances, or valve cover gaskets, now would be a good time along with the EGR cleaning.

You might be able to get away with seafoaming the hell out of everything, taking everything off to clean is a pain.

I would sea foam it and go for a cruise (constant speed on a long straight prefferred) That way the egr system opens up and re circulates all the seafoam through the system. Id do this 2-3 times with the last time being a high revving non-cruise drive.

Seafoam is best. What you are cleaning are the egr passages.

Thanks for the input everyone. I have amazing experience with taking off the whole intake system, so that's not that big of a problem. I've always wanted to Seafom my car, seeing as it does more than just clean the EGR system. I will take it off when I have the chance and clean it. Then, if I can, I will Seafoam.

If you are taking off the intake, that's even better. you can clean them thoroughly one at a time.

How exactly does one go about cleaning the actual EGR disc?

IIRC the disk is not usually fouled but it may develop a ridge and that cannot be cleaned a it is worn. If its not shaped like a convex lens at the end but more of a flanged wdge, its probably done. Too bad you can just get a replacement pintle as they could be removed form the early GEN 1 $170 stepper motor EGR valves.
