Replacing the starter? Other parts?
It seems (for now) that the valve covers are the culprit for all the leaking we are seeing on the SC400. Looking through the FSM it seems to be a rather involved process. The starter on the car is not sounding normal (sounds a little grinding and whirs) and figure as long as I am in there I should replace it as well.
- How long can I expect for this to take if I were an experienced mechanic versus a shade tree? I think the starter replacement is booked around 5-6hrs?
- Also, is there anything I should go ahead and replace while I am in there? No point removing the manifold a 2nd time for something else if I can avoid it now.
- Am I better off taking it to a garage for this? I have done Nissan engines in the past, but this Lexus motor is pretty daunting in its design and complexity of fit. It is worse than my 300ZX TT IMO. At least on the 300ZX TT (Z32TT) I didn't have to remove half the motorset to replace a "cylinder head cover gasket" (valve cover gasket).
- Finally, what is the best gasket set to get? Lexus? Or other? Are there any other places for Lexus aftermarket parts?
