Default Help with front main / oil pump seal

Front main seal is leaking so I bought another and I am TRYING to get the old one out, but it is REALLY stuck on there and my pick is digging into it and breaking it up.

Are there any secrets to getting this thing out clean? I can't get the pieces out of the grooves to even put the new one in if I continue to dig at it.

what i did to my old one was carefully punch it w/ a flat screw driver in the middle and twist/bend it a little until it opens up a small gap between the oil pump wall then stick the screw driver in the gap and kinda push it out.

OK so there is where I have the issue because this one seems like it is molded to the dang metal, like it is sticking... so it's tearing apart. I have a small chunk out of the donut so it is not a complete circle and it is just not coming off........ not just the seal inside, but the center of it as well holding the two seal areas together. It's ALL stuck.

hmm in that case maybe you're gonna have to go ahead and rip the rest of it off since you already teared a chunk off.

Didn't really have an option. It's literally molded into place. Original seal and it has a lot of miles..... 250k

It's just peeling off the metal inside the seal little by little and I can't seem to get it to release from the center. Being a real pain.

I was able to get a pick under it and it won't BUDGE. The metal is attached to something. It's bending outward and thin metal, but it is very securely mounted to something. I haven't done this before so I am sure I'm screwing this up somehow, but I can't find a single mention of this in the FSM. I have the replacement oil pump seal, and front main seal, but can't get this off.

I don't see anything on the front of the oil pump that could be holding it.

There you go Brian, that seal puller (or one like it) was going to be what I suggest. The oil pump gets hot and over time it melted the rubber to the metal. The seals are a tight fit to begin with, but when they are old, they NEVER come out easy bud.

Gonna pull the oil pump in an hour and do it that way. Don't have a puller and already pretty much tore it all down. Thanks

Drive a screw or two into the seal and use a pair of pliers to leverage on the screws, or a slide hammer.

Stealing oil pump off spare engine but it's out of the car. Trans still hooked up, no way whatsoever to keep crank pulley still.

Oh wait........

That works WAY too well.

Not stealing oil pump anymore. SO not dropping oil pan IN the car. Trying to do it with spare engine out of the car and still can't get it to drop. Did everything the FSm said and only the front of the pan will come down 1/2 inch when pried. Can't get the back to come down. Am i missing something?

Took 4 bolts from lower bellhousing. 4 from inside #1 once I got in there, and many from the rest of the pan.
