i was just thinking about this.
did you notice this?

the ECU defaults to "D:"
so maybe this was all for nothing?
all i have to do is use a clutch switch, instead of bridging the PARK wires down at the P1 plug... this will connect PARK when the clutch switch is engaged, then leave it OPEN when the clutch switch is not engaged, letting the ECU default to DRIVE.
what do you think?

I think that would be great except for the risk of thrust bearing wear. I would not run a clutch start switch on my car even with a stock pressure plate. I saw that default to D thing in there too. But yeah, you could probably still use the ebrake to send the clutch signal.

ok so how would i wire the relay to do that, if the e-brake is normally open and connects to ground.

Just like we already said. The only thing is, it probably needs to be one of those high sensitivity relays to work without frying the diode upstream and possibly the cluster. I would run this by OLT or Dr Tweak and see what they recommend. I think our theory is sound, but the execution may need a bit of tweaking.

i just got confused again.
i disconnected my PARK jumper wire (i have this jumpered so i can crank the engine over) and the CEL came on... apparently, it thinks it's in more than one gear at a time if it is just left open. i think it thinks it's in Neutral and Drive at the same time.

It probably just sees an "open" and thinks the switch is bad.

good point.

i really just need to sit down and take a good look at these diagrams tonight.

stockhatch, do you use alldata?

i use alldata, but i'd really like to get ahold of a 98+ FSM, or even just the wiring diagram.

I don't. Isn't it a pay service? I ran across full schematics for early SCs when I did my Aristo swap. I use those in combination with the Supra schematics floating around the web. That is why I am no help with the later SC wiring unless someone posts up diagrams like you.

These OBDII cars are such a PITA. They whine about every little thing and throw CEL tantrums. I don't envy you when you boost that thing brother.

well i wired up the relay as planned, and it still doesn't seem to be in Drive.
the D isn't lighting up on the dash, and the CEL will come on if i don't leave the neutral safety switch jumpered.

I would think you jumper the NSS for park like you are doing (basically grounding it right?), and put 12v to it for drive (ecm battery voltage like it says).. or am i totally off.. it is very late indeed.
you know how to get park, just focus on getting the D to light up, then you can make a relay around that.
so start touching wires to it until the D lights up more or less. I know its not complicated cause I have seen it on a manual swap. there is a video somewhere of a manual SC going from N to D with an auto cluster, but i cannot seem to find it anymore.

stockhatch,
pins 4 and 9 are connected via my relay, when the e-brake is DOWN.
pins 4 and 7 are connected when the e-brake is UP.
(connecting these up at the IJ1/IK1 connectors thought)

i was just thinking it may be because of this "trans control" switch that i don't have jumpered (bottom right of the pic) that is tied into D. it looks like the D power wire goes throug that switch before making it to the cluster. i dont know about the ECU side though.

I will look at it more tonight once I get home. I saw that little bugger down there "shift lock ecu" and wondered if it would screw everything up. When you pull the ebrake up does the P light come on?
