Minor tranny issue, please help if you can.
Hey guys I recently have started having a small issue with my tranny.
Now the best way for me to describe it by saying it has developed somewhat of a "clunk"
This clunk is not very loud at all and only someone that knows the car would be able to notice it really.
Now the tranny seems to be running perfectly fine---no slipping---no wierd grinding noises or anything so far.
But when im driving along --say in second gear--although it happens in different gears i think----if i let off the gas i hear a low clunk and feel a very slight jerk-------when i push back on the gas i feel the exact same thing this time the clunk comes from giving it gas and not taking the gas off.
it doesnt happens all the time and only seems to happen in a certain gear or rpm--quite low rpm's.
Any ideas?

It doesnt seem to be4 getting worse but i am positive it never did this before.
The winter is very hard on these cars I should of never been driving it.

there is also a slight whine im noticing at like 900 rpm that seems to be coming from the tranny.
happens in neutral or drive or reverse.
would i typical auto mechanic be able to tell what the problem is ?or do u think i need to bring it ot a tranny specialist?

If you feel some roughness when you engage and disengage the throttle cruising at low RPM's then it sounds like some shudder from the torque converter. Check your transmission fluid first, if it's not red or smells burnt, I would start there. A full flush with Toyota T-IV fluid cured this issue on my '92 when I first bought it.
With some of the other issues you are describing, I'd take it by a shop to be sure.

thanks sc coupe, now when people say a trasnny fluid flush do they actually mean a flush of some sort or just a tranny fluid change?
now that i think of it i was smelling a burning smell the other day ----before this problem occured, i wonder what that could be.

is the torque converter a serious issue?
it makes sense because the proplem isnt in shifting it is in giving throttle to the tranny---i would think the torque converter would be the culprit more than the actual tranny---althgough i am of course speculating at this point but it makes sense.

If it breaks it is. Sometimes the converter can get stuck or have trouble locking or unlocking. This will cause clunking in your driveline. Most often what happens is the converter has trouble unlocking and when you let off the gas and the engine slows down the converter doesn't decouple fast enough and you get clunk from the built up force being released.

if this is a torque converter issue what am i looking at cost wise to replace it?
anyone know ?rough estimate?

If its the TC a fluid and filter change with some good fluid would be the best first step. Check all the engine and transmission mounts and diff mounts, along with the u-joints and driveshaft first. These can be checked easily and quickly and need to be eliminated as causes before thinking inside the transmission. But if your fluid and filter haven't been done recently or ever you should do that anyway. As for cost, its not cheap as it requires pulling the whole transmission. If you have a high mileage car and can confirm its the TC you would be better off changing the whole transmission, TC and all, to a lower mileage unit, its all got to come out anyway.

my mileage is very low at 85000 miles.
i checked the fluid today and it smells sort of burnt.\
i am starting to think this is a driveshaft isue as it seems to make sense.
i doubt the tranny is giving out soi earely on it its life.

i dont mean to keep complecating thew issue but the reason all this started is my engine developed a coil issue and the engine when started -------would shake horribly violent----scary violent--so much so that i thought i blew my engine when i would start it------it dawned on me that this horrible shaking could in fact damage the engine mounts and or tranny mounts---especialoly as i dont know how long it tool my mechanic to diagnose the issue---he may of had to start the car multiple times before diagnosing
ive been focusing on the issue and im leaning towards a driveshaft issue as it only happens on thrust of throttle-------tranny doesant slip at all
