"Then you will see the motor(round in shape) and some kind of worm gear, may be the gear need to be lubricated. The part# for Lexus is 08887-02007( Body Grease W). DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE. This is the special grease for all of the steering column and if you use 4WD or wheel bearing grease it will make it worse.
The best way is go to Lexus dealer and ask one of the tech. to spare one of the steering column grease. Tell them the yellow grease they used when they rebuild the steering column on the LS and LX. They probably have about 100 of them around the shop. Try this first before buy the motor."

This job only took me the afternoon, much time was just looking for tools and parts. 10mm, 12mm, phillips screw driver, understanding which parts to take out...etc.

I bought my SC with this problem and had resigned to the fact that I'd have to drive with the wheel in the "up" position forever or until I could afford to drop $600 on the motor. Thank you so much for this guide!! I'm in love all over again!

Yup, I did it as well. Although I could not find the right washer, just by cleaning and regreasing with that yellow stuff, it works great. I took off the auto tilt so it will be used alot less.

 

Nice, nice!! If my tilt wheel ever goes out, I'll definetely follow your example!!

just saying thanx for the good info. along with all the other surprises i've found with this car a week ago when i bought it, this was another one. and another problem helped with to a fix from CL.

I have the same prob. on my LS. I took eveything apart as per dir. I tried to loosen the nut that holds the gear in place and the whole shaft spun including the gear (which didn't help the revive the stripping) How did you hold the gear in place and remove the nut?

 

mine just came lose after a while of trying to get it off. i was about to go to a friends shop to use an impact on it, just to kick it lose, but i kept messing with it, and it eventually losened up. but i thought i was going to have this same problem for a while. the next problem was removing the blue gear, lol. what a pain, but, mini allen keys being held by pliers worked well, lol.

 

I believe that was me. But yeah, very nice job with the step by step explanations and detailed pictures. It will help me out a whole lot. Thanks!
