Tilt steering repair

Jdm, look at the pictures at the start of this thread. After you pop the clam shell cover off (the hardest part for me) you will need to remove the metal cover. Once it is off, look at the top of the blue gear, there is a worm gear, or a gear cut into a metal shaft. That is the up and down mechanism. You will need to clean off the grease, then check the line up with the top of the blue gear and the worm gear. On mine, I placed the water hose washer BEHIND the blue round gear to make the teeth line up in the worm gear. Be sure to re-grease everything (I used hi temp grease) and it should work like a charm.

THANK YOU!!! I LOVE driving my car again. It was stuck all the way up so I've been feeling I was driving a 18 wheeler . It just took 97 cents (the 3 water hose washers) and 20 mintues of my time to fix this. This should be stickied!!!!

Thank you--YES it's fixed. Only two observations--1) one of the 2 screws on the underside is sort of weirdly placed and was hard for me to find; and 2) O rings are probably a better choice than washers. I first went with washers but the darn hole in the washer was a nanometer too small--not a problem with the o ring.
Big ups to the original poster--awesome job.
Totally agree this should be a sticky.

I never use the auto tilt feature as I can get in and out fine, but I was playing aorund with my cluster, and noticed moving the steering wheel up and down caused a clicking noise, so I ran to CL and discovered this thread.
I just did this fix, and to save people from going to home depot/lowes 3 times in a span of 3 hours and spending a whole 2 dollars in different washer sizes, get 9/16 sized washers. I got 5/8 first, and it fits fine behind the blue wheel, but in front, if not lined up perfectly, it will grind the worm. You must use a 9/16 OR 5/8 size in diameter center hole, but the washer must be smaller than the blue gear. I suggest taking the blue gear into the hardware aisle, when I did it, I was just guessing, and since washers were only like 25 cents each, I just bought an assortment. Great DIY I would I have never even known about if not for CL !!

awesome, absolutely awesome. one thing i noticed is the old grease seemed to cake up when tilting down so i cleaned up any that looked dirty and replaced it with white lithium grease. some of my teeth were chewed up one one side but i have the tilt all the way down and thats enough for me.

I'm new to this sight and just wanted to say thanks! This worked perfect! Thanks for saving me the $$!
I was also having a problem with my telescopic not working on the steering column. I just tapped the motor housing for that and it started working fine. For now anyway.

Tip to whoever needs this next: to remove the blue worm gear, instead of using paper clips I used dental tools -- that tool that's got a small hook that removes food particles between teeth. Push those in on each side, hook up the wheel and pull.
