Default Alternator Wire Path

I am doing a Big 3 wire upgrade on my 1997 SC400 and I would appreciate some advice on the alternator to battery wire. Do I run the wire direct from one to the other ? I tried to follow the path of the original wire to see where it went but if I don't need to run this same path than that would save me a lot of work. I am leaving the original in place also. Thanks
