Unhappy Need Help With My SC300!!!

The engine on my 1993 SC300 occaisionally shuts off right after I start the car and it will sometimes die while I'm driving, but the electricity stays on. The car has been at the dealership for the past 9 days but they can't get the car to die again nor do they know what is wrong. I think it may be the fuel pump, but I'm not sure since I can't find any other topics with the same problem. Any help would be appreciated since it is getting dangerous to drive it more than a few miles at a time.

How much do those usually cost and would you recommend replacing the fuel pump too?

I had mine do the same thing.....died on me twice while driving and wouldn't start again till the next day....I'm a mechanic, and am now driving around with test equipment in the car just hoping that it will die again so I can diagnose it, fix it, and end the paranoia.

I'm pretty sure it's the fuel pump ecu. It's located on the driver side of the rear panel. Remove that and you will see a black ecu. Search 12v fuel pump ecu mod and it will show you what you need to do to bypass it. This should fix your car issues. It's easy to do!!! Good luck!

Thanks man! I kept thinking it was probably the fuel pump or the ECU but the stealership didn't want to mess with it unless they knew for sure if that was it. Is the ECU the same thing as the regulator or are they two different things?

they are two different things. fuel regulator is in the engine and the fuel pump ecu is inside the car.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the information. I figured they were two different things but I thought I would as just to make sure.

I've had this problem before with my SC4 and I cleaned the throttle body and this hasn't happened to me anymore.

^ Nothing on the throttle body would cause the engine to shut off.

Btw, I fixed my problem today.......car cut off in the middle on an intersection, had power to the fuel pump ecu, but not coming out....bypassed it on the side of the road and had it running again in 10 minutes....hope it cures you problem as well!

I'll give the bypass a shot as soon as the dealership gives me my car back. Are the ECUs expensive to replace if I were to buy a new one?

I think the new fuel pump ECU is around the $100-$200 range. I would just bypass it and go on down the road.

I'm not discounting anything here really, but I would make sure all grounds on the car are solid. My 92 SC has exhibited intermittant problems over the last 18 Years and 91.3% of the time it has been time/corrosion/ground issues on the wiring that have been the issue. Yes, your fuel pump or fuel ecu could be going...I just don't know that you're down that road yet.

Grounds to check/have checked would be
1. Main ground from batt to engine block
2. Cylinder head to firewall
3. Lower intake runner (injector circuit ground can cause the behavior you describe)
4. Fuel pump ground from the tank assembly

Good luck.

I'll make sure to look into all of your suggestions. I just got my car back from the dealership and they wanted $380 for just the ECU, so I'm gonna try the bypass when I get a chance and see if that works.
