Default ok so need advice about this toyota mechanic

Hey guys, my car has been running very strange lately and i replaced all the vacuum lines shortly thereafter my CEL came on for a code 71-EGR so i brought it to my mechanic and explained to him the extreme loss in power and large hesitations throughout shifts.

He
He proceeded to tell me my vacuum modulator is bad but that could in no way affect my cars performance and that when he drove my car it ran perfectly fine and seen nothing wrong with it, i asked him if he took it over 15 miles an hour and he said no he just drove it up the block.... fcking wow.

anyways my car also seems to have a vacuum leak when i start it up even if the engine is hot if i get in and dont hit the gas for a second it starts to have a horrible idle..... so im assuming this is associated with the bad performance.

the guy said he is going to repair the egr but it wont restore my performance any.... im starting to wonder if he is a real toyota specialist

The vacuum modulator is a common cause of code 71 / EGR malfunction. Aside from that, it sounds like this guy might be full of it.

yeah seems pretty full of it, i mean sure hes competent in the fact he figured out the vacuum modulator was broke but woop dee doo.

this guy tuned my car up a few weeks ago and my car ran GREAT and now a few weeks later my car has an extremely noticable loss in acceleration BUT he says that if him and his mechanic drove it and they dont notice anything then its perfectly fine....

dude seriously go find a real mechanic that will actually take care of you without BS.

its not that hard to figure out the code. it takes a paperclip. unless youre blind or super ADHD, counting blinks shouldnt be an issue.

good luck.

To answer you question about affecting performance. If you are bone stock, yes it can. The factory ECU ties into all the EGR system (obviously) and can directly affect timing and fuel delivery if it senses EGR malfunction. Your car is tuned from the factory with emission factored into everything, if there is more or less exhaust gas recirculation into your intake the ECU will sense it and adjust accordingly.

The "mechanic" is a joke, go somewhere else.

a small update regarding this mess,

i went to pick up the car yesterday and payed him freakin 260 to replace the vacuum modulator because this genius went to lexus for the part and payed 150 for an 60-80 dollar part because it has a different part number.

i really dont understand how a "toyota specialist" wouldnt realize its the same fcking part on the same engine even if its in a different chassis/car

and to top it off as soon as i start pulling out of the shop it starts giving me the problems i brought it in originally for, i could car less about my egr ill take the damn thing out.
so immediatly i bring it back to the shop and make him drive it and he proclaims wow ive never had it do this blah blah blah blah. Then his mechanic walks up and sees whats happening and is like wow i drove it all this time and it never did this more blah blah bull****.

so then this guy points at my mass airflow sensor and says that maybe my 02 sensors are dirty..... im seriously done with this guy.

does anyone know of a real toyota specialist here in las vegas, or nevada for that matter haha

To answer your question as well 5spd jzz30 i checked the code myself and it came up for egr, the real problem with my car doesnt even lie in the egr and i knew that so i just took it to the mechanic because for what my car was doing it wasnt throwing a code. just real coincidence that it threw an egr code same time
