Should I get a 1JZ or a 1JZ VVT-i?
there's a shop down the street from my house and they have both these engines. they want $1500 for either or i believe. What do you guys think? What are the pro's and con's between these two engines?

The 1JZ-GTE (non VVT-i) swap has been done a ton of times so there is a lot more experience and info about it. There aren't many 1JZ VVT-i SC3s that i know of, some one here on CL is currently trying to complete the swap. The advantage of the VVT-i is that it is a single turbo (as opposed to twins on non VVT-i) and has better low end response. VVT-i also provides better flow under full load conditions. The only downside is parts compatability is still unknown for the VVT-i as very few people have tried it and posted information about the swap. If this is your first engine swap go with the non-vvti as the swap is relativley simple, parts are plentiful and you'll have more options for power upgrades down the road.

yeah i noticed it had only 1 turbo when I saw it. Well that sounds reasonable... another thing on my head is that I have an sc400. I've heard people go through a hassle when they do the swap on a 400 against the 300. I'm thinking of maybe buying an sc300 to do the swap on that one and keep my 400 as a 400 lol.

Do you plan to modify it for over 400rwhp or do you just want a clean stockish upgrade?
If you are going for big power, standard 1JZ.
If you just want more low end power and a stockish feel, go VVTi (will cost slightly extra to install).

Go with the non VVTI, send the harness out with the stock v8 harness and the 1jzgte harness to get it wire up to your car.
Should be a couple days of work. There is alot of information on the 1jzgte swap, Search thru the forum you'll find tons of information on the topic.

When Swapping a 1j into a 400 you will basically need quite a few sc300 parts like the drive shaft, 2j engine mounts, i think power steering lines, etc. Its almost like your converting it to a 300 first so the swap will go through easier.
