Default CEL on 92 Sc300 stick

I was driving to work this morning and the CEL came on, I drove on the CEL for maybe a minute before i was able to pull off the freeway and stop at a gas station, so it was pretty quick. No overheating, belts seem fine, hoses seem fine, gas cap is in there good.

How do i check to see what code the car is giving me? the car is parked at my work right now, i'd prefer not to use it but i barely noticed a power loss, if any. Could be the CEL doing something to the brain to tune the car more conservatively?

How do i figure out what this is without having to go to a $ealership? If i get the part i can do the repair myself.

Thanks,
Joe

Scanning for OBD1 codes is really cheap. The scanner is also reasonably priced if you wish to do it yourself. But no matter what you will have to drive the car back home or to a shop on the CEL until you get the problem repaired.

So I got to my friends house, he shorted something in my diagostic port which caused the CEL light to blink codes. I got 7 1 and according to my service manual it's an EGR malfunction.

What's the best way to go on a bone-stock sc300? EGR delete or repair/replace the EGR? Can i pass emissions w/o the EGR?

Thanks,
Joe

Emissions wise it wouldn't be a wise idea to eliminate the EGR. Fuel mixture is biased off the EGR when the valve is open, so you might get some high HC and CO numbers. 100% gaurenteed the NOx levels will suffer the most. The only drivablility issue would be during cruising and some accelleration as you might get some misfires. IMO get it fixed unless you want to go FI then just leave it until you get an EGR delete when you slap that turbo on.

No you will most likely fail emissions without it, but let me tell you i accidently blocked mine up once and i never had my car run so good since. it felt like a beast.
