Default Heater not working - Is this ok to do?

Ok so my heater isn't working and we already have a foot of snow on the ground so I got desperate. The car is a '92 SC400.

There are 2 small diameter hoses on the top of the heater valve unit, basically what I did was disconnect the small one, and put the long into the top vaccum hole on the tip of the unit (where the small one use to be connected into). I'm not sure what to do with the small hose, so I just left it open, because my heater works now. When I switch it back to normal, my AC works just fine.

I plan to replace the HCV unit, but probably can't afford it for a few months.

Just wondering if there are any long term problems to doing this? Also, is there somehwere I should put the small hose, because right now it's just kind of hanging there open. Thought about folding it on itself and plugging it into the hole right next to it, which would basically "close" that unit. Let me know thanks.

The vast majority of the time the heater stops working in these cars because the coolant is low. Your situation with these mysterious hoses sounds like it may be different (pics would help), but I would check the fluid in both the reservoir and in the radiator.

The fluid is fine in the reservoir, however I didn't know you could pour it straight into the radiator itself. I don't see a fill cap or anything on the radiator.
