Default Transmission Jerk and Whine in reverse-also check tranny and trac off lights

This is the first time my car has done this, so I am curious if anyone has experienced a similar issue. I did search, but there are so many different issues, but none really the same as what I have. Here is what happened in a nutshell:

I got into my car to go to work. I turn on the car, it idled at around 900-1000, ie cold start, though it was about 89 or so outside, so the engine wasn't freezing cold. I put it from park into reverse. It jerks REALLY HARD, and as I began to let it go backwards the transmission made a really loud whine, which I knew wasn't normal. I put it into park and repeated getting the same result. I turned the car off and tried again after a few minutes, but it engaged HARD, but this time no whine. When I got onto the street it engaged HARD into drive, but ran fine.

I got out of the neighborhood and as I drove down the street the check tranny light and trac off light came on. The two lights near each other at the left end of the cluster. It would turn on for a few seconds and then turn off. It would also do this intermittently as I drove to work. The car ran fine and it shifted normal in drive through the gears. As I got to work and reversed into my spot, it shifted fine into reverse, no hard jerking.

On my way home from work however, about 7.25 hours later, it shifted fine into drive, no harsh shifts.

So my basic symptoms are:

Really hard jerking into reverse or drive.
Bad whine from tranny in reverse.
Check Tranny and TRAC light off.

Anyone have any clue as to what is going on? Help would greatly be appreciated.

Damnit Brian......

Guess I can't drive past 12am or drive in wet weather

In all seriousness, anyone?

This car wasn't purchased from a mean looking step mother with a hot, kinda homely looking daughter was it?

Still, midnight deadline... could be also Mogwai.

As you've seen in my previous posts the TPS controls the transmission shift points (along with other things) so it can't hurt to look there first since it is right on top and easy to view/clean/etc.

I did adjust those before, but they were best for me at stock setting.

However would this affect shifting hard into reverse or shifting hard into drive?

Also would it cause the check transmission light to come on, as with the trac light to come on?

The trans light and trac light along with hard shifts has always been an indicator of a bad torque converter, but there are SO MANY other problems it could be. The bad part is finding someone with the right equipment to read the REAL tranny codes that were stored with the light (and there are some... and they will tell the tale) without bending you over your very own knee and shoving it to you.

Still, the bad news....... it is probably the torque converter since it did it in reverse, then proceeded to do it in forward also. This means it is before the main pilot gear at the input since the trans doesn't care what gear it is in behind the torque convertor. Search trac light / torque convertor for the bad news company you will share with 7 yrs of previous posters with the same issue.

I'll definately get the codes pulled sometime in the next few days.

Also off topic, but my tach needle sometimes on startup doesn't move. It stays at 0 from between 0-30 seconds, then out of nowhere jumps to where its supposed to be. Anything serious or just a small glitch? OLT care to chime in?

Sounds like it is rubbing the face of the cluster. If it is NOT rubbing the face of the cluster, the tach motor is going out.

Crap.....Lets see....Buy a Lextreme TC, or go with a nice gently used TC. This is going to cost me an arm and a leg .

For what its worth, I have the torque converter from my SC400 transmission with under 70k miles on it if you are interested in finding one gently used or for one to send off to Lextreme so as to avoid the core charge and/or downtime.

I can't guarantee that the TC is your issue. I am not a diagnostic expert. But, I can guarantee that if you need a torque converter, I have a nice one for you.
