Rebuilt & resurfaced Cylinder Head Gasket - good as new?
Follow up questions, but here's the background.
PART 1:
PART 2:
Work done: "R and R cylinder head gasket. Surface head."
New questions: is my car/engine now damaged goods?
How reliable/durable is a resurfaced HG?
Thanks!
PART 1:
2000 SC300 w/ 100k
Timing belt + water pump done 11/07 at 97k
90k service done 09/07
Then last month, as noted by mechanic: "Driving car in traffic; heater stopped working then car temp started to get hot. Tech found 2400 PPM HC in cooling sys. Will need to remove cylinder head and inspect. Suspect head gasket failure."
There's no leaking. Compression test was OK.

Two weeks ago - Car towed in. Just learned that a line/hose was badly connected during the timing belt/water pump job leading to leak into head gasket.
At least shop is standing behind work and repairing HG for free.

Sorry if I missed it, but here are my 2 cents.
Depending on age and health of motor, the rings may be a little weak, and when you mill the head to make sure it is flat, you effectively raise the CR of the motor. If the rings were a little weak to begin with, it may smoke from blow-by afterwards.
This by no means is a definate, but is a possibility, and I always let my customers know of it beforehand.....Although none have smoked yet, knock on wood.
Good luck.

R and R is remove and replace. The headgasket was not reused. The head was resurfaced to make sure it is completely flat, which overheating could cause it to warp. As long as the work was done right the car should be good.
Thats good that they admitted fault.

i would have done a metal head gasket and ARP head studs. using a 2.5mm HG will lower your compression but when/if you go turbo.
i havent heard of many 2jz motors smoking because of had rings. its possible but not highly probable.
if the shop did the work right you should be good as new.
good luck and enjoy. let us know how it turns out.

There's a 12 mo./12000miles warranty which should be ample to vet the work.
Thank you for all your help and responses.
