Default 1jz vs 2jz which is better

i've been searching the forums for a while now and i was wondering which is the better engine for a swap. i currently drive a 92 sc300 with 171K on it, the other day i found a 1jz-gte for around 2200 and a 2jz-gte for 2900. i was wondering what the difference is. i'll be honest i don't know much about lexus or toyota engines so if anyone with the swap could tell me the difference and which they prefer i would like to here it.

More displacement equals more torque, quicker spool up of same size turbo, quicker off the line ect.
1JZ < 2JZ plain and simple.

The answer to that question i think depends on your power goal and budget.
I chose the 1jz because of its initial cost. $1200 shipped complete with OEM side mount and piping is about half a 2jzgte if not less.

As every one else has said, the 1jz is MUCH cheaper but is .5 liters less so the overall power level will be less and the spool up will be sloower with what ever turbo you use. With either you will run into tranny problems because the r154 from a soarer is VERY rare but again if you can find one it is alot cheaper than the 2jz 6speed(v160) out of the supra and the v160 will handle tons more power i have heard that about 6-700 is starting to play with fire with a r154 and upwards of 1000 with the v160 and either block is perfectly stout enough for many many many horsepower the 2jz as everyone knows will get you well into the forth digit and i have HEARD that a tuner in japan hit 1004hp on the stock bottom of a 1jz so it all comes down to your wallet and goals, if you want a 1000hp monster and money isnt an option go for a 2jz with v160 if your a broke college student go for a 1jz and keep your w58(assuming you already have a 5speed) and keep the power under ~400 and your fine.

P.S. the 1jz is a much more straight forward swap with much less pain in the *** wiring

hope that helps alittle, i dont clim to be an expert most of this info is based off what i have read on here from ppl who do claim to be experts if anyone sees something wrong please correct me so i can learn and the person who asked doesnt get misinformed

If you have the money for a 2jz-gte go for it... that 2900 your talking about isn't all you will need ! Be a lot more... assuming you would want to run the Getrag tranny....

You could always bolt the 2JZ block to a 1JZ head and you've got the good bits of both motors lol.

I say 1JZ VVTi, cheaper than a 2JZGTE but quite strong torque at low revs, I love it.

1jz is best if you're going for quick cheap power, like under 350whp. If you want more than that, you have to shell out $$ for a bigger turbo, manifold, etc.

NA-Ters pay more initially, but have the potential to make a lot more power for less money past 350whp.

Right now, the 1jz electronics are superior to the 2jz-GE electronics since it runs a map sensor and coil on plug ignition. It more boost friendly. That may change soon enough though; there's some products in the pipeline that may even out the playing field on the electronics front

If you're on a budget, go for the 1jz. Both 1j and 2j have their merits and tbo, if you dont want those 500+ figures, you dont need the atomic bottom end of the 2j. I would only go down the 1.5jz route if you got hold of a cheap 2j bottom end. I have a 1.5 but only because i had alot of goodies done to my 1j head.

you are probably running a w58 trans. depending on hp goals i would leave it till it gives you problems... it might never.

good luck!
