Default What if my Timing Belt Snaps?...

What would be the reprocusions to the engine if the timingbelt were to break at moderate to high speed?

I know (with the old-school push-rod engines) you'd end up with bent rods, trashed valve stems, and quite possibly a wrecked cylinder head.

But is the SC400 engine built the same way as that? Would the same type of damage occur if the timing belt got thrown at highway speeds?

If not, then what type of damage would (might) occur?

Thanks.

NON-INTERFERANCE.... I knew there was a term for it that I had heard before (just couldn't remember what it was). Thanks. This is good to know.

I'm probably a bit (5k-10k) over the recommended timing belt change interval. I recently bought a belt to swap out myself, but just haven't had the time to get in there and do the work. It's good to know that I won't wreck my engine if I can't get to it before it snaps.

Thanks.

its not like the belt has an expiration date in it. it wont snap right after you pass a certain interval at which you have to change it. my buddy had a 2003 is300 with like 130k and no timing belt change yet....i told him its not good but he has no time to do it. his car is about 60k over the recommended change interval and it still runs fine.

if you are over just a bit on the mileage i wouldnt worry about it too much.

Yeah, jzz30, I really am not really too worried. I may just wait until the spring or summer months to do it anyway (its only 11 degrees right now here in Michigan).

I've had belts snap on two other cars of mine, so it's nothing new to me. And they were probably about 40k-60k over.

no big deal, my Toyota Celica had 210,000 on it before the timing belt snapped, and that was only because the water pump was leaking onto it. Just put in a new belt and bam, back on the road. You gotta love Toyota/Lexus!

FYI, the later year VVT-i engines are interference designs and so a bit more care should be paid to those. The earlier non VVT-i ones are as described.

I thought when a timing belt snaps, the valves will snap as well. Then you have to change the head. Lol I live under the rock.

Newb question: Is 92 1UZ-FE non-VVTI?
