Default getting engine code read

I have a check tranny light on and need to get it read.I went to Autozone and they said they cant check it because my car is too old and they can only do 96 year models and above.Where does everyone else get there codes checked?Do you guys go to Lexus?Do they charge just to read a code?I dont have a Lexus dealership near me.Can Toyota do it?
