Rebuilding a W58 is gonna be much cheaper then swapping in a 6 speed, but the 6 speed will obviously be able to handle more power then the W58....... How much power are you pushing??

I cant remember the level of difficulty in installing the 6spd, but the price of a 6spd (from what I've seen), could easily leave you with change after a w58 is beefed up.

I'd take the w58 beefed up.

the real issue is who can/will build the w58?... the answer is you either have to go fully custom internals or cryo-treating thus far. so unless you want to spend the cost of 2 v160's for custom internals or cryo your gears and make them brittle with only marginal gains you wont be better off building the w58.

well if the rebuild will be more expensive. then the 6spd is the better choice. especially since its built to handle much more power.

Couldnt the w58 just be rebuilt with new gears synchros and cryo treat it? why would custom internals be needed?

IIRC, there is a member on the supra forums that cryo treated his w58 gears when he did a rebuild and all that did was prolong the damage from happening sooner. The extra time that the tranny lived was not very long and not worth the extra money of cryo treating.

PPG sells a set of dog engagement gear set that should handle whatever you throw at it but msrp is $7500AUD which comes out to about $5800. This is the only w58 upgrade i know of.

Just use the R154 transmission with a 1JZ bellhousing...fits better, 5 gear trans that lets u keep your stock final drive ratio, lighter than the getrag trans but stronger than a w58..also much cheaper than getrag swap.

How strong exactly is the r154? I am debating between the v160 and the r154. Looking for more than 500whp, though.

Folks have been running 650rwhp with the BoostLogic R154 kit daily driven with no problems. It's significantly stronger than the w58 trans and cheaper than the getrags..much cheaper.

It's from either, though they are different and teh 7mgte version from the mk3 requires modification to the shifter, I've read, to move it back.

Yeah thats what I've been reading. Anyone know the max that you can put through it? I'd like to couple it with a rear end witht he long gearing like the tt lsd's. Thoughts on that?

I have found that you can put in an r154(modded shifter)or an auto tt diff, but what if you want long gears and the r154?

I'll keep searching,

Ian
