500 miles on my 1JZ swap... a review, plus dyno and track numbers!
Well, I haven't been posting much over the past 2-3 weeks since my car has been running so I thought I'd give you guys an update. I told myself I'd baby the car for the first 500 miles, for a few reasons. The major reason was the clutch was brand new so I had to break it in, but also I wanted to make sure there were no problems with the 1JZ swap, and didn't want to drive the car hard until I knew everything was perfectly fine.
It was a long few weeks, but as of earlier this week I hit 500 miles. I had not had a SINGLE issue with the car over those miles. My temperature gauge didn't even work for the first 350, but doing the temp fix confirmed that the car never went anywhere near even 1/2 way. Starting around 400 I gradually started to drive the car a bit harder, and by 500 miles I wasn't worried about breaking in the car anymore so I drove it like it should be driven, lol.
If anyone is thinking of doing a 1JZ swap and is not yet convinced, do it. The car performs just as a Toyota should. My 1JZ swap gets better gas milage than the 2JZGE, runs cooler, and is every bit as reliable. Whenever I pull up to a car show a crowd forms all around my car, and it performs AMAZING for the setup it currently has. I'm running stock boost, stock fuel system, stock everything except clutch and FMIC.
So, what better way to celebrate my car being broken in? Take it to the track, and then the dyno of course! First, my 1/4 times.
I went to the track with a bunch of friends Friday night. I really had no idea how it would run, so when I ran a 13.7 @ 101 my first run I was very impressed. By the end of the night, here were my two best runs:
Yes, that's 13.4 @ 105, and 13.4 @ 106.
The car loved the track, and drove great all night, so I figured I'd take it to the dyno Saturday morning. I dyno'd my car completely stock last year, so I wanted to see the numbers on stock boost, and once I turn up the boost I will get the car dyno'd once again. It's a Mustang dyno so the numbers are significantly lower than a DynoJet, though most people feel they are more realistic.
First, my stock dyno from last year, non-turbo.
Now, the dyno on stock 1JZ boost.
232hp / 243tq. Seems low, but again it's a Mustang dyno.
Other noteworthy things from the dyno sheet... somehow they estimated my crank hp to be 318. I'm not sure how they came to this, or if it's accurate, but if it is, that is very impressive. Also, if you notice, the weight is 3750 with the guy driving it. My SC weighed over 3800lbs before the 1JZ swap without a driver.
Now to begin modding!!!!!! Thanks again for the help throughout the way ClubLexus.
Cliffnotes:
-if you're thinking of a 1JZ, do it, they're sweet.
-13.4 @ 105, 13.4 @ 106, stock boost, +FMIC and clutch
-dyno 232hp / 243tq on a Mustang dyno, again same setup.
-3750lbs with driver after 1JZ swap, 3800+ before without driver
-318 crank hp?
-I desperately need a new camera.

Your dyno was on stock boost correct? If so, 232whp is pretty dead on, with s 15% drivetrain lost and the factory rating of 280bhp. Im not sure how they calcuated 318bhp, It seem like they factored in 25% drivetrain lost but even then, the number doesn't calculate correctly. Congrats on a good running car. btw, are you running the stock w58 5 speed trans?

Thanks guys Yes, the dyno and the track were on stock boost, and I have a w58 5-speed tranny (stock)
I hopefully should be getting my boost gauge and controller in the mail tomorrow, and once I get that I will be turning the boost up to about 14 or so... I know the turbos can handle 16, but I'm not going to push it.
1JZ300 - Can't wait to see pics and details on the new setup. When you were pushing 16lbs, was that on stock injectors, stock fuel pump, etc?
MR2 - Nice signature, I sold my pos DSM, bought my SC300 and the motor swap, and broke even.. best decision I've ever made.

It cost $1000 for the engine swap, plus about $100 for the ignitor, $200 for FMIC, $200 on custom piping, and then random costs. I did most of the work myself, since all everyone that was going to help me realized they had no idea what they were looking at. One of my friends who is a mechanic dropped the actual engine in, and I did everything else.
