Hmmmm, just taking a guess. I'm not a full mechanic just yet and I hate working on transmissions, but it might be two of one things. Either A) you're torque converter has taken a dump on you, or B) you're trans is fried. Is it slipping out of gear at all? Is it reving high then lurching?

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Quite possibly the fuel pump ECU is starting to die, it's a glorified relay used to switch the fuel pump from hi/lo modes.

Try the diagnostic jumper detailed on my site, if this resolves the cutting out you will need to replace the fuel ECU.

holy crap this is weird. i JUST had this happen to me twice tonight!!!!!!!!!! took a right hand turn, and it died, took a left and it was fine. parked, looked around under the hood. left my house, took another right, bam, died again!. so weird i came across this thread tonight. i originally thought it was my battery tie down bar, since there is only 1 bolt and the top swings. i thought it was hitting the + of the battery and grounding out, but, we tested that theory and grounded it out and the car didn't do anything, lol. this really freaked me out. its not doing it anymore, cuz i was testing it on right turns on the way home. i am replacing my fuel filter tomorrow for other reasons, but that would be cool if it helped this too. any other info you come across, please post it up.

Pelase explain more!

My Soarer (for about a month now) has stayed in first gear until around 30~35km/h then drops properly into second then third (sometimes it doesn't even stay in second gear)... and when I shift from Park to Drive there's lag in the gearbox... any ideas?

The Gearbox issues should really be another thread, but seeing as we are here;

What fluid are you using in the autobox and is it full? We only use Toyota Type4 fluid, it can make a hell of a difference to the way the box works.

If you have sh1tty old trans fluid get it flushed and replaced with Type4, drop and clean or replace the filter, (Toyota Type4 is bloody cheap in Oz and Really Bloody Expensive in England £40/4Ltrs and you need 12Ltrs do do a full flush) This might just be enough to revive you autobox, if it dont work the box is probably sh4gged.

Dont consider a box rebuild, difficult to get right (very few people have had experience in re-building the Toyota A340 gearbox because they rarely go wrong) and highly labour intensive, get a warranted s/hand box from a breaker, theres plenty around.

Hi Bill,

Cheers for that I've got Toyota T-IV running through my gearbox's veins. It was flushed and refilled when I had the 150K service done, I've now got 187K and it's only happened recently.

Neil's got an auto box with shift kit going for AUD$1000, but I dunno if I should keep on saving for an R154 conversion.

The symptoms are just like the failure I had with my TT autobox, then I lost 1st & reverse (same clutch I was informed). I had a "rebuild" done by a transmission specialist, it went back four times in a year with various faults. Eventually I bought a cheap s/hand box which is still running fine now after 40,000mls.

I have driven a manual TT and it really ruins the Soarer smoothness, it's hard work to keep it from doing neck snapping gear changes. I am a lazy sod anyway, I gave up manuals a long time ago.

I would buy that box today if it wernt in Australia

well, both were real simple fixes, the car cutting out stalling and dieing, was a bad fuel filter, it was choking the engine out, and the right hand turns ended up being the battery tie down, i found the back tie rod was off lol, so i tightened them back down secure as ****, and now the car runs perfect,

my car is still really hesitating on shifts though, so im going to just starting saving for a w58 conversion any1 know any1 selling any conversion parts???

the back of my tie down was that way also, but i was hitting the + part of the battery with the tie down, and the car wasn't dying. so, r u sure that was the case?
