Talking Data time....

Ok guys, regardless what anyone may say, there is a significant increase in my power once the car is moving. I took temp readings under two different conditions and saw temp differences of over 50 deg F between the engine side of my heat shield and the filter side, where I have a strip of test insulation. The insulated area is about 10 - 15 deg F cooler than the uninsulated area.

See my web site for the details including pics of the readings and mod:

Thumbs up You must be in my garage!

I have the exact set up on my SC4! I completed mine the other day, when I posted this thread. The only difference is the air entrance. I bought a "gutter funnel" to catch and direct the air through the aluminum hose.(it makes for a nicer look and it catches all the air through the vent/grill) I must try that insulation on the other side of the shield wall.

I agree with you maybe it's me, but I believe I can feel a slight difference. Impressive for $8.00 bucks! Nice pics too!!!

i thought some of these links might be useful for the debate...

http://www.teamdelsol.com/howto/coldair/diycoldair.htm

the above link is a how to for honda de sols but it has quite a lot of good info and pics as far as what type of material to use, where to get it, etc... one solution to the aluminum heating up is to spray paint it with high temp paint which is, according to the article, ceramic based and is helps with heat insulation...

another link is:
http://www.brucenomura.com/products/akimoto/default.asp

which actaully made a cool intake box for martin kraft's gs400... a few pics to give ideas to a truelly enclosed air intake box...

Arrow aluminum box....

I do like the idea of a fully enclosed box as shown in the link. Hopefully I will soon find somewhere I can form thicker gauge aluminum and construct something similar. Thanks for the direction, this should help further. I will however still coat the interior with the insulation material. I also have a wonderful 6 probe recording thermocouple device which I will connect to various points in the engine and go for a drive. With sampling every 5 seconds for over an hour, soon tangible results will be posted..

Lightbulb COMPLETE cold air intake SYSTEM

Well i did it!! i went and had some pipe bent to fit. painted it inside and out....(looks wise,) its alright. but on the performance end it makes a differene if u ask me. its much shorter, and more direct to the intake. it doesnt seem like it heated up either.
if anyone is interested, im going to try and pakcage the whole system, to sell it!!!!
it would consist of

~mandrel bent pipe(ur choice of high temp color)
~vacum hoses
~maf adapter plate
~cone filter
~rubber connecting sleves

***extra peices would include*****
~aluminum heat sheild (ur choice of high temp color)
~plexiglass top cover (to complete the airbox)

not sure of price yet, but if anyone is interested let me know, that would help push the idea
*this is for late model sc300 only right now*

u can e-mail me direct w/ any questions BENICEANDSWALLOW@YAHOO.COM

ill try and have pics soon of the whole system

Post Ok, concrete temp data

I ran my data logger on my current setup. You wil notice the labels stating what the car was doing. The hyw fast, was well, going fast on the highway then slowing way down, then taking off again.

Look a the huge temp drops when I was going over 65, Up to 25 F at some points!!!

If anyone wants, I can run this on your car if you are around Ft. Wayne, IN.

Now the VERDICT is in.......... I was and especially now a believer!

Great work and the data to prove it....... Now if there's a cheap mod that works this is it!

Question

Hey, do you have results without the shield in place?

I'm just curious.

Thumbs up Heat Shields do work

I have the stock intake on my SC for now, but I have a custom intake and heat shield on my heavilt modded Infifniti Q45t. Believe me, it is well worth it, particularly on hot days or if you have been driving the car around the city for a long time where temps build up.

Hey Icon I just noticed you are in Dallas, while reading hoops thread. So did you find all the parts for the intake local? I know the adaptor wasn't but the rest of the stuff needed? I'm thinking about doing this Do It Yourself type setup over the Akimoto that's ~$300.

Home Depot!!!

&

Wal Mart!!!

12" x 24" aluminum sheet...Heat shield... at HD they cut the length you need off a roll... several thickness grades available

card board sheet for template of heat shield (old box, poster board, construction paper, etc.)

Wire snips "cutters" ( I used a heavy pair of house scissors to cut the sheet to the pattern I needed)

4 1/2" - 6" x 4' or 6' aluminum "galvanized" dryer hosed... "cold air/ ram air effect tubing... WM or HD

Black heat resistant spray paint... WM to paint the bottom in and out of the tubing to go behind the vent. to blend in the shadows not to be seen from the outside...

Black pull ties, Wire ties, metal brackets<I chose the brackets>(to hold air tubing in place)... WM or HD

I used the existing screws in the power steering housing to secure the heat shield...

and a little time...

I made a post to the Swift Racing forum and they used a similiar method to yours. Check out their comment.

Thomas,
We used a similar method, but our was done using a OBDII scan capture tool that measures the intake temperature as the sensor in the car reads it.
