Default DIYing the power steering pump

Ok, my friggin' PS pump went out last night (I swear to G*d, if it's not one thing, it's another...) and I started to take it off today. Well, I was lazy and didn't go to intellexual.com till like 5 mins ago. Intellexual PS pump replacment - DIY On step seven it say to turn the pulley, but the pulley is off, soooo... what? Also, how do I loosen the tension on the belt to get the pulley back on, or do I jus pull REALLY freaking hard? Also, I'm pretty much doing this differently than the site says. Oh, and best of all, when I had my engine swapped, they didn't put the bolts back in that hold the pump on... that was nice to find out once I took the pulley off. So any help out there woul dbe appreciated; I'm going to AutoZone tomorrow to get a rebuilt pump for $100.

Default Replacing power steering pump

I tried running a search on this but no help.

I am replacing my power steering pump in the near future because it's been making this nasty whiny noise for a while.

Does anyone know if I have to replace anything else such as the hose, filter, belts that run along with the pump as well? Or can I do without them?

My mechanic suggested me get a high pressure hose for the pump replacement as well. Is this a Lexus/Toyota exclusive item?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jon

Thanks.

But after spending much time reading the threads, I still have a couple more questions that are left unanswered.

Do I really have to replace the high pressure hose when I change my PS pump? If not, how can I tell if the hose is still good or not?

Do I have to replace the filter as well? Or does the filter come with the new water pump?

I searched, but there were like 1000 threads that came up, I went through about 40 and gave up. But thanks anyways OLT. Anyways, I figured out how to get the pulley back on: if anyone wants to know, get a friend to grab a 14mm socket and wrench and put it on the idler pulley bolt. Try to tighten it; this relieves enough tension so that you can pull the pulley back into place.

I am in the process of doing the same thing now.

Did you replace your high pressure hose when you swapped out the pump?

If not, was there anything else that you replaced along with the pump itself?

Thanks in advance!

Do I really have to replace the high pressure hose when I change my PS pump?
NO

If not, how can I tell if the hose is still good or not?
CRACKS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER HOSE.

Do I have to replace the filter as well?
WILL COME WITH ONE INSIDE

Or does the filter come with the new water pump?
HUH? TOTALLY DIFFERENT AREA THERE.

Is this a Lexus/Toyota exclusive item? YES, $27 .....6 INCHES LONG. it is triple wound, unlike the other hoses.

THANK YOU.

It's only $27? Weird, I swear I just saw some threads saying that this stupid little hose is about $386 or so.....

I had those $27 hoses replaced last time when those dumb schmucks who replaced my tranny almost screwed up my PS pump.

My new mechanic said he recommends me replacing the high pressure hose. Arrrgh... $386 is a lot of money a piece of rubber.

I also hear some slight squeaks in my rear suspension when I go over speed bumps now. Where's my darn money when I need it the most?

There is a difference in preventative maintenance and plain wastefullness. These hoses are just what they say they are, high pressure. This means that they carry much force and need to be inspected every now and then BUT IT ALSO MEANS they are ten times stronger than every other hose on the car and are made to handle it, don't waste your cash until you have to. This is a completely different concept than a radiator hose. Sounds like your new mechanic anticipates screwing up the fitting on the end since they are hard to work with , and will be getting out of the work of wrestling with it by having you plunk down $400 for a new one so he doesnt have to mess with the fitting.

you gotta get up earlier than that to put one over on me.

The high pressure hose is the one that run from the pump to the steering rack( about 6" long). It is expensive, but the construction and designed for the high pressure.
The creaking noise from the rear is from the upper control arm bushing worn out or sway bar bushings. The only way is to replace a whole upper control arm assembly. But you can start with a set of rear sway bar bushings, which is cheaper and easier to replace.

Thanks for the explanations.

I just did some testings on my PS pump. I started up the car, steered my wheels to the left and right a few times. Needless to say, the pump was whining like crazy as usual.

I then turned off the ignition and check the PS pump reservoir, but the funny thing is there is no bubble to be seen in it. Does it mean that the pump is okay?

The only thing that's unusual is that my PS fluid seem a bit dirty (brownish). Since I had just replaced the PS fluid 4 months ago, my mechanic suggested that it might be a bad high pressure hose, which might've worn out in the inside, causing all the dirty residues in the fluid.

Assuming there's NO leak in the system/pump, could you tell me if there's anyway for me to tell what might've gone wrong with my car? In other words, any possibility that the problem not stemming from the PS pump itself?

Thanks again.

Also,

Is the hose discussed in this thread the same thing as the 6' inch hose you referred to?

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...+pressure+hose

I don't mind skipping a couple of meals and shell out $27 for a piece of 6' inch rubber. But for $386, I think I am going to flip on this one.
