Default Nav screen brightness

I feel like a total idiot asking this question. BUT......I was driving merrily along today and suddenly my nav screen goes to dark....like screen saver dark. I can't see the map unless I stop, bore my eyes to the screen and peer into the darkness. The same thing happened to the info screen in front of me on the dash below the gauges. Since I knowingly didn't reset anything, I'm trying to find the easiest way to change the brightness, as I can barely see the nav screen to read what's being displayed. If it's a tech problem, I can deal with that but I'm trying to find the easiest way to reset the brightness level first. Thanks

Buttons on the dash to the left of the wheel set display brightness for the instruments. The NAV is a little more hidden--Menu button on the console, display, you can have Day mode all the time if you want, or the other settings there (bright, contrast). Generally it works with the headlights to enable night mode, but if it's bright inside the car it may stay on day mode even when headlights are on. (Don't put anything on the dash that could cover the light sensor, either.)

it almost sounds like the backlight failed from the description, although you mention it's happening to the info screen as well

I think the sensor on the NX is calibrated wrongly. And I also think there are 2 sensors - one for the automatic headlights and the other for the dash lights. I know the headlight sensor is in the middle on top of the dash, behind the sat nav display.

There has been times where I have gone under a bridge and I can't see anything on the display at all. It goes so dark.

Ok, thanks to all of you; I've not tried to fix it yet as I've been tied up with other things, but will report back tomorrow and let you know who had the correct answer.

I turned the headlights on auto and it worked fine; I turned them on the 'on' setting and it went to darker mode (Nav screen), so I got into display mode and somehow daytime setting was turned off. Don't ask me how, but I set it back to daytime and it's fine in all headlight settings from off to brights. Thanks to everyone who helped me sort this out.
