Well in my ISF they replaced the Mark Levinson stereo system. That paid for the warranty. I had other things done, but the Mark Levinson was the main one.

I had a 2012 ISF. 6 months in to my 2 year platinum warranty the A/C died. Took it in to get it fixed. They said they flashed the system. And it was good

Drove it home, no problems. Next morning, broke again. Took it back. This time they changed a valve in the engine compartment. Got the keys and just sat in the service area. Started the car a couple times. A/C breaks again. This time it’s half working. Blows cold out the back seat center console. Hot air up front

Gave them the keys back. Took my loaner back home

Almost 3 weeks later they call and say it’s fixed. Service mangers shows me the paperwork. It’s almost a ream of paper from the printer. They couldn’t fix it. Call Lexus HQ. They tore my ISF apart changing every part in the A/C system

They just threw parts at it till it kept working. When I picked up the car. Was told parts and labor was 8.000 dollars. Not counting the first two visits

That one repair will pay for me to buy extended warranties for all of the cars I purchased

Every Lexus I’ve kept over the factory 4 year warranty. I have purchased a two year extended platinum warranty. And each one has paid for itself

If you are planning on keep the car longer than the Factory warranty. Get the warranty. Besides all of the electronics that could break. People with panoramic sunroofs are in for a big surprise if it explodes or breaks. Those are 10K plus repairs

Two exceptions, I am glad you made money on you warranty ...most people don't. The warranty is one of the biggest money makers for automobile dealers. But if it gives you peace of mind, by all means buy one. Also, remember one thing in finance "Time Value of Money"

YMMV,

Table of Contents

Lexus has long been known for the quality of its vehicles. Built to last, the brand’s sedans, crossovers and SUVs are known for offering many years of trouble-free motoring. Despite the almost bullet-proof reputation, however, it’s good to know that Lexus owners can rely on an extensive warranty package that guarantees peace-of-mind if (or when) something does go wrong.

The basic warranty is bumper-to-bumper, and it provides four years or 50,000 miles of coverage. The warranty covers repairs and adjustments needed to any part of the vehicle in order to correct defects in materials or workmanship. In addition, the Powertrain Limited Warranty lasts six years or 70,000 miles, and covers the engine, transmission, transaxle and drive systems.

Lexus offers a separate warranty for its hybrid vehicles. Hybrid battery control modules, along with the inverter and converter are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, while the hybrid battery itself is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles, but only on 2020 model year vehicles and newer.

The brand’s extended warranty programs, known as “Vehicle Service Agreements, or VSCs, are available in three versions: Lexus Extra Care Platinum, Lexus Extra Care Gold and Lexus Extra Care Powertrain. To help you sort out the differences, we’ve broken down all these coverages below.

Lexus Extended Warranty

All three levels of Lexus’ extended warranties—Extra Care Platinum, Gold and Powertrain—kick in after the factory warranty (four years or 50,000 miles) expires.

Based on Lexus dealer data and our research, the automaker’s extended warranties average between $2,800 and $3,000, depending on coverage level, but we’ve found reports of consumers paying as much as $3,700 or even $4,000. Even these higher costs compare well with extended warranty costs on BMW or Mercedes-Benz products, but as dealerships can set the price for these products, it’s best to shop around.

Platinum

The Platinum Warranty covers almost the entire vehicle, and could be viewed as almost a bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Major components, including the air conditioning/heating system, engine, transmission, axle assembly, brake system, computer and electronics, engine cooling system, electric components, fuel system, hybrid components, steering system and suspension are covered. The only exclusions are wear and tear items like drive belts, batteries, brake pads and rotors, filters, wipers and the like.

Gold

Like the Platinum, Gold covers the transmission, axle assembly and hybrid components. It also covers the computers and electronics, air conditioning/heating systems, brakes, cooling systems, electrical systems, engine, fuel systems, steering and suspension, but with specific exclusions that are itemized in each category.

Powertrain

Finally, the Powertrain warranty covers the transmission, the axle assembly, some parts of the hybrid system and the engine, although oddly enough, some parts of the engine (certain valves, gaskets and switches) that are covered under the Platinum program are not covered here.

What’s Covered by Lexus Extended Warranties?

All three warranties—Platinum, Gold, Powertrain—include 24/7 roadside assistance and reimbursements for vehicle rentals, meals and lodging.
  • Roadside Assistance: Coverage is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year within the continental U.S. and Canada, and includes towing (for covered breakdowns), flat tires, being locked out of your vehicle, dead battery jump starts and fuel delivery services (up to 3 gallons, no more than two times per month).
  • Vehicle Rental: Up to $50 per day for a maximum of five days per occurrence.
  • Travel Protection, Lodging & Meals: Up to $100 per day for lodging and meals if you’re more than 150 miles from home.
  • Deductible Options: $0 or $100 per eligible repair visit. However, the deductible is waived if the repair visit is performed by the dealer who sold you the extended warranty plan.
  • Transferability: Coverage can be transferred once, at no cost, from the original owner to a private party.
  • Cancellations: All extended warranties can be canceled within 30 days of purchase for a full refund (minus a $50 processing fee, as permitted by state law). Cancellations will be prorated if applied for after 30 days.

What’s Not Covered by Lexus Warranties?

All Lexus warranty programs, including the basic warranty, come with the following exceptions/conditions where the vehicle is not covered:
  • An accident or fire
  • Abuse or neglect, including racing, alterations to the vehicle or lack of scheduled maintenance
  • Acts of nature, including hail, floods, lightning, etc.
  • Odometer tampering
  • Any alteration to the vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • The vehicle has been considered a total loss by the insurer
  • Wear and tear items like tires, wipers and the like are also not covered

Other Lexus Protection Plans

Lexus offers a number of other protection plans, including the following:
  • Guaranteed Auto Protection (GAP): If your Lexus is deemed a total loss by your insurer because of theft, fire or collision, the “gap” between your vehicle’s market value and the balance on your finance agreement is covered with this plan.
  • Tire & Wheel Protection: Fancy wheels can be very expensive to replace, which is why Lexus offers two Tire & Wheel Protection plans: Gold and Platinum. The Gold plan covers the replacement of tires and wheels if they suffer structural damage due to road hazards such as nails, glass, potholes, rocks and the like. It includes up to $100 in coverage for towing expenses. The Platinum plan adds other benefits (not related to tires and wheels), including paintless dent repair (if the dents are no larger than 4 inches in diameter), and the repair of chips and cracks in the windshield.
  • Excess Wear and Use Protection: If you’re leasing your Lexus, you’ll need to bring it back in top shape, or you’ll be charged for any excess wear. That’s where this protection plan comes into play, since it waives charges for things like body dents, torn seats, a chipped windshield, scraped bumpers, damaged wheels, etc., up to a maximum of $7,500.
  • Key Replacement Protection: Modern key fobs can cost hundreds of dollars to replace. This protection plan covers lost or damaged keys/key fobs, and includes lock-out assistance, towing assistance (up to $100) and transportation reimbursement (up to $75 for a taxi, rental vehicle or public transportation).
Some of these products are provided through third parties, and some through Lexus Financial Services, which is part of Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (TMCC). Some states may also have these products provided by Southeast Toyota Financial Services or World Omni Financial, related companies that are similar to TMCC.

Lexus Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Programs

Like most automakers, Lexus offers extended warranty coverage for used vehicles via its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs. Lexus calls them L/Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, and their CPO warranty is known as the L/Certified Limited Warranty. This extended warranty begins after the basic warranty expires, and remains in effect for two years with unlimited mileage.

For added peace of mind, each L/Certified vehicle goes through a 161-point inspection and quality check before it is offered for sale at a Lexus dealership.

This warranty covers any repair or replacement of components that fail under normal use due to a defect in materials or workmanship, except for a number of components that are normally considered “wear and tear.”

In addition to the warranty coverage itself, Lexus offers the following services and benefits to their CPO customers:
  • Complimentary Maintenance: Available for a period of two years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. Service intervals occur every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever occurs first.
  • Loaner Car Program: If your vehicle has to stay overnight at a Lexus dealership because of a warrantable condition that needs more than eight hours to repair, Lexus will provide you with a loaner vehicle for a maximum of five days.
  • Travel Protection: If an emergency breakdown occurs at least 100 miles away from your home, and your vehicle needs more than eight hours of work, Lexus will pay for overnight lodging and meals, up to a total of three nights (up to $200/night), as well as for substitute transportation for up to five days (maximum $50/day).
  • Roadside Assistance: Provided for two years (unlimited mileage) from the expiration of the basic warranty, or from the vehicle purchase date, whichever occurs later.
  • Towing: Charges are covered to the nearest Lexus dealer.

More than a few people have commented that Jerry no longer replies to calls or emails

I have seen a couple other names mentioned

tdietrich@toyotaofgreenfield.com
exus
jennifer@lexusofannarbor.com

Something else you can try. Next time you visit your local dealership. Ask about purchasing the warranty. When they quote you the standard price. Just say no thanks. Jerry has quoted me a much lower price. And you were just wondering if you could meet his price.

Very strange to hear that. Friend of mine with a 2021 NX300 just got a Lexus warranty (Platinum VSA) from Jerry Johnson and there were no issues with getting it done or his responsiveness.

Okay, now I understand ... all extended warranty companies lose money because sooner or later everyone who has a policy will need repairs and will collect more than they paid for the warranty. So sooner or later all warranty companies will go broke and have to file Chapter 11.

Time Value of Money. Smart investor makes 6% a year. Start with a $3,000 policy and after 4 years it would be worth $3,787.43 a gain of $787.43

YMMV,

Unless you have one 8.000 dollar repair

I never buy more than two years of warranty. Which on my last vehicle was around 1000. Around year 5 or 6 I always get a new car

Wow GX, 6 Lexus and every single one required major repairs? Why did you stay?

I would have long ago run away fast and hard from Lexus. I've been a fan of Toyota and Lexus for the last 20 yrs significantly because none of them required ANY major repairs. The largest single non-maintenance repair expense I've ever had in Toyota land is $800 worth of struts on my (at the time) 17 yr old Sienna. Camry, zero repairs (although I only kept it 6 1/2 yrs), RX was 14 yrs and the only non-maintenance related cost I had was new rear shocks (although the struts were probably due at that time, it was getting clunky, but I just traded it instead).

But I get it why some like the security. My wife really wanted the extended warranty on her Forester when we bought it from a Subaru dealer as a CPO still with just a little original factory warranty left. Made her feel good and against my normal modus operandi I let her do it. Partly because this particular model year has a notorious history of its electric thermocontrol valves crapping out and they are almost the same cost as the extended warranty. In the end, Subaru recently added a free 15 yr 240,000km warranty extension on this part, so LOL, so much for that idea.

Question for all of the people asking why someone would purchase and extended warranty. How did you feel paying for an additional year of Platinum Warranty?

When you bought a new Lexus NX, you got a 4-year 50,000-mile warranty. Where if you had purchased a Rav 4. You would have only gotten a 3-year 36.000 mile one

Lexus didn't give it to you out of the kindness of their heart. You paid for it when you bought the vehicle. If a Lexus is bulletproof. You shouldn't need the extra warranty time.

I owned a lot of GM vehicles back in the day. A knew a lot of people that worked for GM, my son builds seats for GM trucks, and so I thought I would be somewhat loyal to GM. Had terrible luck, they were all tow truck driver's dreams, and why I now refuse to buy GM. I gave up on them 20 yrs ago when I switched to Toyota, they've been a tow truck driver's nightmare.
