iOS 17
At this point no one should be running anything less than IOS 16.6.1 . This version and below has a fairly serious and somewhat easy to exploit security issue. If not 17, then at least latest 16.
Technical description:
A buffer overflow issue was addressed with improved memory handling. This issue is fixed in macOS
Ventura 13.5.2, iOS 16.6.1 and iPadOS 16.6.1. Processing a maliciously crafted image may lead to arbitrary
code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
Simple description:
An image can be constructed that confuses the phone's operating system when trying to read and display the image, causing part of the image to overflow into the code execution part of memory. In short, the bits and bytes of the image contain a malicious program that will improperly be dropped into a memory area that allows it to begin executing as code.
