By excessive shifting, I mean that, the marginal increase in efficiency and performance going from a 6 speed to 8 speed likely isn't worth it with this specific curb weight and engine type. Seems to me, that is exactly what Lexus was thinking in this case.
I agree, the end does not justify the mean when it comes to the excessive cost of the 8 speed tranny but you can pretty say that about most technologies that increase gas mileage. This 6 speed tranny has been around since the dinosaurs, it serve its purpose and gets the job done. Reliability is good and it saves money. If Lexus put a 8 speed tranny in the NX, it will most likely cost a couple thousands more and gain about 1 MPG on the highway, not exactly something that will increase sales.

I leased my 2020 NX 300 at the first of this month. The car the lease expired on before this NX was a '17 IS200t with an 8 speed transmission. The biggest thing that annoyed me about it was it seemed to always be hunting a gear. Up, down, up, down, up down, especially in the lightest hills. It's EPA city rating was 22 MPG, the same as this 6 speed NX. I haven't even got 100 miles on the NX yet and probably won't be taking any kind trip in it until spring time or even summer. But already I can tell I like the way the NX transmission handles city driving much better than the IS did.

The 8 speed ZF in my BMW on the other hand has to be the best transmission i've ever experienced period. It was literally telepathic with gear changes.
I have a 2016 Base FWD w 80k my avg is 29 mpg mixed but mostly hwy . My avg gas mileage started out at 26 and continued to increase until 40k where it stabilized at 29mpg In eco mode exclusively!

That's the best I've heard for a non-hybrid. What's your average speed in the info screen? Mine is 35mph with around 50/50 mixed driving. As soon as I leave the highway my mpg drops. Stop signs and stop lights just kill the mpg with this vehicle. Best I've had was 24mpg for a few days. It's generally 22mpg and I just hit 10k miles.
