I bought it because it is such a highly reliable car but I, too, feel better having it. I had such a bad experience with a BMW with out of warranty repairs that I still have nightmares. Next time!
Two weeks back I wouldn't even have thought any "Extended Warranty" is needed on recent LEXUS cars, after all, they claim "Lexus has a peerless reputation for reliability and when things do go wrong they’re sorted in a fashion that leaves customers in no doubt they’ve been looked after".

Then my 4.5 years old, 84K miles NX300h started to behave a bit stupid, I brought it to my dealer who concluded (after a quick diagnosis, too quick for my taste) it needed a new ECU (Engine Control Unit): cost estimate of repair: 5500-6000 US$, with a potential "goodwill" participation of about 10%, as my car was out of warranty. ALL previous maintenance was done on schedule.

So yes: never again without extended warranty, whatever the reliability stats might tell ! … I'm still convinced Lexus ranks high on reliability, above other Premium brands, but in MY case, I was left out in the rain.

In my wife's case, I know she feels better having it and even tells her friends about it. Big bonus :-)

Question True or not?

Can anyone with recent experience verify if this is true or not?

I used to work at a dealership years ago. Extended warranty almost never pays out.

I contacted an out-of-state seller, mentioning where I lived, and they did not mention an issue when providing me quotes.
