SMS Settings
Go figure. Out of blue, mine decided to actually start recognizing SMS and letting me know there's new one.
Maybe they do some sort of silent software updates over satellites? As it's surely connected, as it knows traffic conditions.
But anyway. Hilariously so, what's the point to having SMS notifications, if you can't read them while in motion? When I do not move, it is much faster to simply flip my phone....

you don't really have a flip phone do you?
might be a issue
Just curious what messaging app are you using on your mobile device and what type of phone is it? Wonder if the the app itself has anything to do with being able to receive and read aloud in the car??
my wife has 15 Nx300h
I have a 16 ES300h
every time we change or get a new phone you have to delete the old phone with the car add the new phone in car bluetooth and within the iphones setting bluetooth lexus select show notifications
I have android - and no, it's not a flip phone. Vehicle reads message fine - when you stop. What I'm saying is - what's the point to having this feature, if it's disabled when driving.
My other point is this: I bought the car, set up phone still in dealer parking lot - and it read messages and emails. Then is simply stopped. I gave up on it. Suddenly, as of the last few days, it suddenly decided to go back to recognizing SMS and emails.

Out of the blue today before my wife left for a trip, she sends me a text with a picture showing that her sister sent her a text and it popped up on the NX's screen...lol
Like WTF? I checked all setting the previous day and triple checked everything here with what people have. All settings were correct but when I would send a text to her phone it never popped up on the screen. She won't get back until mid november so I won't be able to see if other texts come through on the screen but I'm completely at a loss... I'm not an idiot either when it comes to tech, I'm in IT...lol This is seriously weird.

What I found was that by going back into the screens on the car and just re-answering the options with yes or no as necessary my car relearned what it needed and it worked again. Go figure.
Had similar problems with my Jaguars electronics and had to constantly reboot the system to make it remember. Technology at its best!

Yes Sir! Wife's RX350 keeps forgetting her phone continuously, she simply gave up. I am a Toyota guy, but why oh why, dear Toyota, you stubbornly do not want to invest into good tech for your cars? Image of Toyotas driven only by old farts not caring about good modern infotainment systems is gone from about early 2000s.
I don't know if it's coincidence but since I've installed my Google phone in my NX it seems that the car now understands me better, like when a say "Call Jay mobile" it does not make a half dozen suggestions like it did with my iPhone.
Press button>beep>Please, say a command>beep>Call wife>beep> Did you say - call wife?>beep> Yes> Please, select number from the list>beep> number one(why there are 3 of the same numbers?)> Did you say one? >Yes>.beep>calling.....
How retarded is this?
Oh, and then you watch a movie with a guy driving a convertible with top down, flawlessly yakking on the hands free with perfectly clear reception...

So I have a dumb dumb question.
Say, you are driving with either one of the Home screens on. Like MPG one. Or Music. Whatever.
Email notification pops up, accompanied with a dinga linga. Or SMS one.
Notification says "you have incoming email/text message from...". Great, technology works!
You have 2 options below. Read and Ignore.
You of course hit Read to the tune of "Messages can be read only when vehicle is not moving". Bummer, but understood. Safety. Got to keep them hands on the wheel, right.
So here's the thing. That notification will STAY on the display, covering it pretty much all, if you do not Ignore it.
What means, you have to carefully remove R hand from the wheel, place finger onto that touch pad, slant your line of site for the R eye (L one stays on the traffic/road) to guide evasive cursor onto the Ignore button and press the pad.
That brings me to a dumb dumb question. Doing all this is OK, having message read not OK - when you are moving? Shinjirarei.....
