NYPD warning guys, becareful
The cops will be cops. Most of them don't live in the city and are not keen with dealing with those from urban neighborhoods. If they get out of hand with you, jus get there badge and tax numbers of the officers. You have a right to obtain that information from them. Also, you can file a CCRB complaint with the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Their is a ICO (Integrety Control Officer) at each command that you can call up and complain to if you have a problem.
I find this so ironic because two days ago I was pulling out of the gas station and I drove down onto the oncoming traffic lane (which is sooo illegal) for a half a block. Then I pulled a right turn onto the block I wanted to turn into and BAM. There was a cop that drove by and saw the whole violation. He rolls down his window of his cop car and stares me down. I didn't even glance back at him, but i just knew that he was staring at me. I drove right pass him thinking that he was going to pull me over but, he just drove away. Lucky me.
Another time...Couple of months ago, I was cruising home from the usual activities and I stopped at a red light. Listening to my fast paced music and the SC was feeling like a beast that night. When the light turned green, I immediately punched the throttle to full for a whole block and I look in the rear view. There was a NYPD cop car right behind me! So I was *****ting bricks! I really thought I was going to get pulled over, so I returned my car to normal speed. I kept on driving for continuously awaiting the sirens to turn on...and....supriseingly, nothing........I was shocked once again....

Two cops just gotrrested earlier in the week in bklyn for pulling a lady over for not wearing a seatbelt, then followed her home and sexually assaulted her. There was dna evidence at the scene. There are bad cops out there and they are subject to criminal charges for wrong doing. It is a shame that we have to fear the very same people who are supposed to protect us. Mind you in that case one cop is black and the other white. There is a police culture and minority cops assimilate and develop that culture over time

It sounds like the original poster may have had a bad experience. Please don't label an entire department with the actions of a small percentage.

As for what you did for a living, I was just curious, thats all. Most civilians do not know what an ICO is, so I was curious when you referred to that position in a command. By the way, an ICO's primary function is not to accept complaints from civilians, they would merely refer any to the CCRB intake line. As for an officer's shield number (shield, not badge) yes, it must be furnished to any civilian upon request per the Patrol Guide and it's also public information. In fact, you can make a CCRB with a partial last name, RMP number, etc., and they will find out who the officer involved is.

As for the seatbelt issue, NYPD requires seat belts to be used and the department is enforcing this regulation.

Does everyone bad mouthing the NYPD and cops in general realize that there could be, and i'm sure there are, cops who are members of Club Lexus? The same people you talk to and go to meets with. Just goes to show that on their off days cops are just regular people, but when they are working they do have a job to do.
Most cops feel too powerful, I understand its their job but harrasing people on the streets is illegal. Im white 23 years old live in a predominently white area Manahattan Beach and have been pulled over too many times. There are so many undercover narcs that drive around in the neighborhood but most people are oblivious to the fact that they are driving around hustling people. Tuesdays and Thursdays are true, a detect told me so himself. Most of the civilian dressed in Impalas and econoline vans are called buy n bust task forces they drive around keeping an eye out on suspicious activity and run up on people who look like they are up to no good. I know of people just standing at a redlight and narcs just surround them and drag people out of the car and proceed to search the whole car. Most of these offficers dont follow procedure which leads to illegal searches and seizures. In most of these cases, lets say you get pulled over and they search your car find pot or some other drugs, you get arrested, a competent attorney will file a motion to supress and the judge will gladly agree that the evidence obtained will be inadmissable because it was illegally obtained.. During the Guilianni administration the Brooklyn South Narcs were going crazy, central booking was overflowing with minor possesion charges.I look young I drive a shiny Lex but when these narcs aproach me they imediately realize that Im no kid, one who is a parallegal, worked for a NyC councilman and going to law school, they then understand that not following procedure will be a waste of everyones time. I guess knowledge is power. some cops feel the power with out much knowledge. Dont let incompetent police act out of line, know your rights and act cool, once they see you know what you talking about they will be less pushy. Good Luck and be safe.

A New York City police officer has died after being shot while on the job early this morning in Brooklyn, and a manhunt is now underway for the gunman.
Investigators say the incident began when 35-year-old NYPD Officer Dillon Stewart and his partner, who were driving in an unmarked police car, noticed a man in an Infiniti run a red light just before 3 a.m. Monday in Flatbush.
The officers pursued the suspect by car for several blocks, until the man fired several shots from his car, hitting the driver's side of the officers’ vehicle and striking Stewart.
According to police, the suspect then fled on foot into 100 East 21st Street, but a closed garage door allowed the suspect to escape.
Stewart, who was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting, was struck once in the chest.
The officer underwent hours of surgery at Kings County Hospital, but doctors say he died around 8:40 a.m.
Stewart is married with two children, and he has been on the police force for five years.
He is the first New York City police officer to be killed in the line of duty this year.
If you have any information about the shooting, the NYPD urges you to call 1-800-COP-SHOT.
COP SHOT is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
