MERRICK, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Liz Nasta's Lexus suffered this smashed windshield.
CBS
It happened on Long Island, damaging 50 cars in total – in at least five different communities.
"This is just malicious intent," said Hank Arkin, a Merrick resident. "Whoever it was got the whole block."
Liz Nasta, also of Merrick, had been counting on a peaceful Sunday, until her shattered Lexus left her frazzled and angry.
"There's all glass in the car," she said. "It's pretty sad."
Carol Brown's car suffered a broken mirror.
"It's just very upsetting. My car just came out of the shop on Friday. The last thing I want to do is have it repaired," she said. "I hope they catch the vandals."
And the hunt is on.
The criminals were apparently just as busy as they were brutal. The rolling demolition team hit more than 50 cars in Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore, North Bellmore and Wantagh.
"Total vandalism…just miserable people out for a joyride," said Arkin.
But with all the car parts flying and glass shattering, there were surprisingly few witnesses.
"None of the neighbors heard it," said Nasta.
Police are checking to see if any of the crime spree was caught on surveillance tape.
