Default Serpentine Belt

I just got my car inspected for emission purposes for NYS. The mechanic told me my serpintine belt has cracks and I should replace it soon. He quoted me $48 for the part and $40 for labor. Is this a good price? I just checked Parts.com and they have the belt for $57.00.

What do you think?

Ed

Sounds reasonable, as long as it is a Toyota/Lexus brand belt. If it isn't, then go to the dealer and get the belt you need, and take it back for installation (or have the mechanic order the Toyota/Lexus one in)

Part sounds about right, but it is EASY to do it yourself, especially if you can get an assistant. All you have to do is swing the tensioner to the left, slip the belt off the pulley, then remove the belt. Then route your new belt properly, according to the sticker under the hood, have your assistant swing the tensioner for you, and slip your belt on the last pulley!! Much easier than the old V-belts!!

Toyota doesnt make belts! SO it doesnt matter if you get it from them.
Go down to your local NAPA and get it!

be careful with non-OEM belts. They may not be exactly the same length.
I have had several experiences with a Dodge, Pontiac, and a Toyota. Belts were of NAPA, Goodyear and Kelly brands. In each case they were not exactly the same length but all part numbers matched up in computer systems (Autozone, Lappens and NAPA dealer) for the supposedly proper belt for the specific car and application.

In each case the non-OEM belt walked off when the belt tensioner was the spring loaded type. If your tensioner is not spring loaded then this is an entirely mute point.

To be sure, if you go non-OEM, find out the Lexus/Toyota belt length in millimeters and then match it up to the non-OEM belt. Compare mm to mm. If the non-OEM belt listed for your application does not match up, then don't buy it. All belts have the lenght in mm listed on the package.

good luck.
