Great review! Everyone really appreciate it when it's time to do the starter. Thanks.

99% of the time time when a starter fails, it is just the two copper contacts worn down. I replace those for $10 and it is like a brand new starter. I still have original starter shells in all my vehicles including a 91 4-runner. I do this with the alternator as well. Any rebuild shop can sell you the contact kit.

Nice to know.. but you still have to take off the manifold to get to the starter.. Does the starter still come off?

Default Smoke

Did your car blow out white smoke when you started it after installing the starter?

generally, if this happens it is because wd-40 or some other lubricant or degreaser gets in the intake air tract while the whole thing is taken apart...

also, sometimes there is some oil pooled in the intake manifold (over years, the PCV lets some return to the intake) and this gets disturbed..

either reason is nothing to worry about, so long as it stops...

Default Gaskets

Hey do you remember the part numbers for the gaskets. Did you replace the gaskets for the bar over the starter that seals in the coolant.

good question, is it really required to replace the seals? also, is spraying down the intake ports with seafoam a good idea? don't see the bad in doing so

This is a good start...but each pic needs details, details, details.

Also helpful would be part #'s for manifold gasket replacement (if required).

Tool list is good, and torque numbers for bolts.

Thanks!

Does anyone have a DIY with detailed directions to replace the starter?
Something that lists ALL the tools needed and EVERY step to get that a$$ of a manifold off. Obviously for someone who isn't an experienced diy mechanic.

I've been looking all over the place here and there are a couple good ones but none that list every step for a novice.

If the labor was like $300 I'd just pay to get this problem off my a$$ but $1200?? $700??? BULLSHIP

Might be a stretch getting someone to do that, but its not really hard if you just jump into it...

$700 - $1200 sounds a little high... IIRC, it should be around 5ish hours labor, and at labor rates between $60 and $100 per hour, shouldn't be more than $500ish... I will check and see what the book calls for as far as time is concerned tomorrow...

not sure if you are still around, but thanks. Ripped off my manifold today to replace knock sensors, this was a big help. Too much of a pain in the *** to take a pic every step of the way...but looking at your pics and seeing what did/didn't get detached was a huge help.

thanks
