Default Synthetic???

Hey fellas,
I'm considering converting over to Synthetic oil and I don't know which to go with. My car has 90K miles on it and is a 98 GS 300. I've heard so many times that it is so much better and also heard that it is too thin. I change my oil every 3000 mikes as opposed to every 5000 miles but I'm not really satisfied. Can anyone help me out in this matter???? Also what oil filter do I use for Synthetic?? Is it the same for regular oil??? Please help!!!!

Danny

Yes, filter is the same, just the oil is different. Synthetic is better for the engine, but because it's thinner, if you have any existing leaks which are too small to let anything through due to the thickness of regular oil, they might surface if you use thinner oil. That, as far as I am concerned, is the only downfall.

You shouldn't have any problems making the switch.

There should be no problem with leaky seals, here's the link: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...hetic+oil+seal

This link discusses the advantages/disadvantages of synthetic oil: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...hetic+oil+seal

Hope this helps.

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn all the way.
5W-30 for this car (only 23k miles on it). Changing it every 4-5000 miles.
10W-30 for previous car with 150k on it. Changed it every 3000 mi. (car was supercharged)
Mobil 1 filters are fine as well as Lexus/Toyota OEM. Never had a problem.
Stock up on oil and filter when on sale.

Watch the bottles on the Mobil 1, they always have great freebees.
So far I've gotten a first aid kit for my boat, a really nice insulated aluminum coffee mug that actually fits the ES cup holder and doesn't fall over, and a baseball cap.

Neo Synthetic 5w30 for me. Can't say enough good things about it. Mobil1 is a good oil also (i put it in my mom's Highlander), but w/ Neo, my ES300 was fun to drive again, especially when stepping on the gas. oh yeah! so, if you think the generic Mobil, royal purple, etc. is too bland, pick up some Neo at a specialty shop.

If you have a Sam's Club, try them. I can get Mobil 1 down here for only $2 off (in a case of 4) the U.S. prices, something rare down here.

Chiming in a day or two late, but, I echo steviej's comments.

I use 5W-30 during the Fall/Winter for better cold start up flow (lower flowpoint) and 10W-30 during the Spring/Summer - even though the pour & flash points are pretty similar - just a psych thing to me I guess.

HERE is the Product Data Sheet for Mobil1 SuperSyn if you'd like to read up on it.

thanks Dex and Stevie J,

I'm getting so many different opinions that I'm stuck in the middle.....I checked my oil the other day and it's already starting to collect sludge on the inside of the oil cap. Is there anyway to clean out my oil tank by flushing it and then converting over to synthetic?? Thanks again for all your help guys....I know these sound like newbie questions but as far as maintenance on my car...I let my mechanic handle these things....which i see I need to handle now.

You can use Auto-rx to clean the engine inside.
